“3!4!” (three four) by Roo'Ra, 1996

Roo’Ra is known for a lot of songs, but I mainly remember them for this song and “Wingless Angel” (1995), which held a record at being the number 1 song in Korea for 7 weeks on MBC “Best of Pop Songs” program.

In the lyrics for this song, Roo’Ra touches on the transitory nature of the present moment, and the uncertainty of the future, but leaves the song on a positive note that regardless of where you are now, that may the future be full of happiness.

Roo’Ra is known for portraying a Reggae appearance and musical style, which was a culture and musical style largely unknown to Korea in the 90s. By modern standards they can also be categorized as cultural appropriators, particularly Rina Che (appears in dreads, but I found no mention of her having Jamaican or Black heritage - someone correct me if I’m wrong). The rap at 2m17s feels like it’s mimicking the feeling of reggae voices… it’s a bit bizarre.

While I now recognize their problematic approach, I still enjoy their songs as a relic of their time: This is one of my favorite songs from the 90s.

The thing about Pop music is that talent isn’t necessarily the most important factor. Often, its more about the balance of personality, style, production, and timing that makes a pop hit. The argument could be made for Roo’ra, a group that debuted in ‘94 with the concept of incorporating Reggae elements into their music. Somehow Roo’ra is a shortened name for Roots of Reggae but no matter the alias, they were one of the first super successful groups of KPOP.

In the following clip, the more recent group Mamamoo sings a loungy rendition of my personal favorite Roo’ra song, 3!4! (1996). It’s chill, it’s laid back, and definitely better sung. But does it have the same charm as the original? I’m not so sure.

Either way, I can appreciate the switchup/throwback, and it’s cool to see today’s groups pay homage to the OGs of the scene.
