Originally started as Green Monster Games then renamed to 38 Studios. It was an entertainment and IP creator company. 38 Studios was founded by Curt Schilling who was a Major League Baseball pitcher back in 2006. The company got the name after his jersey number. The company was based in Massachusetts and then they moved it to Rhode Island. The move was some kind part of securing a $75 million loan guarantee from that state’s EDC (Economic Development Corporation). Back in 2012, 38 Studios released their one and only game, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. The game is a single-player RP video game developed for different platforms. According to a report, they sold around 330,000 copies in the first month after they released the game. Moreover, the sold copies number eventually grew to 1.2 million in the first 3 months. However, the company shut down a few months later.
It all started on a family holiday gathering back in 2005. Curt approached his wife’s uncle Bill with the idea to open a company that would be into the video game industry. One year after, he announced his plans to 6 of his friends with serious thoughts about opening his own gaming company and asked if anyone else wants to be a part of that. Curt gathered his friends, his uncle and authors Todd McFarlane and R. A. Salvatore to join his venture.
Later sometime he officially announced opening the Green Monster Games or also known as GMG in a press release in September 2006. One year later, Green Monster Games was renamed to 38 Studios because they want to give a more clear reflection of what the company is trying to achieve. Few years later, in 2012, they’ve released their only title, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. That game has showed big success and around 1.2 million copies of the game were sold during the first 3 months. However, that game didn’t stop the company going to bankruptcy.
The founder, Curt Schilling, announced official defunct in 2012 because they had a loan that were unable to repay.
