Winter is here and I hope everyone is having a wonderful time to feel jolly and cheerful. With all the holidays that are upon us;

Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mexican)

St. Lucia Day (Swedish)

Hanukkah (Jewish)

Christmas Day (Christian)

Boxing Day (Australian, Canadian, English, Irish)

Kwanzaa (African American)

Ōmisoka (Japanese)

Yule (Pagan)

Saturnalia (Pagan)

I am pretty sure that someone has though of this already (I am very optimistic that there are many caring folks out there like you reader :) ) but I just wanted to do this since this is the season to be jolly. But as I started this project, I was reading on the different types of celebrations and I  found myself being very nerdy about it.

Yule – Yule time. the celebration of the winter solstice from December 20-23. A celebration that has been absorbed by the many religions corresponding to christmas and christianity. I was surprised in a “hey I have been singing about this but I never knew” surprised.

Saturnalia – the Roman celebration of the winter solstice in honor of the Roman God Saturn. This celebration was then absorbed and its festival have been greatly influenced in many of our winter festivities.

Ōmisoka (大晦日) – New Years Eve in english. This holiday is my favorite because as being a Military Child, MY dad was stationed in Japan for 7 years. Out of these 7 years, I have witnessed this holiday a couple of times. I see a lot of folks (mainly  families and couples) go outside and gather to the center points of their town/city and celebrate in however they would. Most notably is the custom of eating long noodles (I think this is common in other asian cultures).

I always knew the 4 religion that are common known to me; Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Ramadan. What I didn’t know was Saturnalia, Yule, St. Lucia Day, Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Boxing Day (i knew this through BBC tv shows but I wasn’t familiar with its origin), Epiphany, Ōmisoka , and others that I haven’t mentioned but will add once the internet reports back to me.

Digital Button Exploration

We have been testing out some new button styles for the next version of Dustin’s Words. Currently, we are using analog arcade buttons with manual cut and inserted icon paper. While this has tested well and worked great as a low-fi means of communication, we’d really like to make Dustin’s Words more. Our big goal is for caregivers to have the ability to swap out icons as they need through a web app and the digital button displays also give us the ability to open the device up to two way communication, not just one.

What we have pictured above is an exploration we have been taking which mashed an LED display and cherry switch keyboard keys. We’ve combined these 2 with a 3D printed enclosure. As we looked for off the shelf solutions, we didn’t find anything that fit our visions. We still want the tactile feedback to remain, while introducing the digital element. Thus, we started to experiment.
