3D movies were super popular in the 50s and 60s but fell out of fashion. I think it'll probably happen again.

it's not really to the same scale, though

like the top grossing film of all time is in 3d. gravity basically cleaned up the visual side of the oscars this year. hugo did really well a couple of years ago, i think.

but like, ben-hur wasn't in 3d.

like i said earlier somewhere, i don't want every film to be 3d. and i'm not saying 3d won't fall out of fashion, who even knows. i'd be sad if it did, because of the few movies i've seen where it's really really worked for me

In regards to 3D or IMAX 3D in relation to specifically like GotG, James Gunn has been thorough apparently with it. Read his FB posts and he's passionate about it. I think 3D can be useful, but the majority of people don't take the time to use it properly. Cuaron for Gravity did because it was beautiful, Cameron supposedly has numerous times, and now Gunn. Everyone who's seen GotG in 3D/IMAX 3D have suggested people see it in that fashion. People just need to take the quality time to work it.

ok analogy

complaining about ineffectual 3d use considering how long we've even had reasonably functional 3d technology

is like giving a caveman a saw and getting annoyed that he made you a weird deformed bit of log and accidentally lost a finger instead of carving a lovely dining chair

you still have your deformed log and hell if you give it to a particularly smart caveman you might just get yourself a fairly comfy deformed log that's actually slightly better than the rock you were sitting on earlier.

but one day you're gonna get a kickass chair.

also like 3d is SO NEW

and it is a tool. therefore it requires skill and finesse to work well

think of how long we've had editing and montage and stuff and yet here's edgar wright using it in a way that's never been done before
