New pictures adorned the walls, many of them showing people who appeared to be in pain, sporting grisly injuries or strangely contorted body parts.

I just noticed that it says pictures, not paintings. Therefore, new headcanon: Snape’s hobby is photography!

Not to worry, most of what his models had to suffer for this Dark Art was easily fixed by his healing spells!

He sometimes commits some unspeakable, or should I say “unforgivable” atrocities for the perfect photo:

As I said above, most things are easily fixed by healing spells -- but sometimes all you can do when things go terribly wrong (or right, depening...) is to make up an interesting, credible story about it:
