If you've ever watched Yu Yu Hakusho Abridged, there's a scene where Seiryu (from the Four Saint Beasts arc) is trying really hard to convince Yusuke and his team that he's a dragon. And when Yusuke replies "No, you're just a really tall blue guy," Seiryu is like "F*CK YOU I'M A DRAGON"

THAT'S what the whole deal with the Four Beasts feels like 🤣🤣💀💀

Yay!!! My first of the 4 Symbols is done! Usually depicted more as a turtle, The Black Tortoise of the North is a East Asian mythological creature (usually associated with ancient Chinese constellations and symbolism, however it is also seen in ancient Japanese and Vietnamese mythology and symbolism.) It is considered the protector of the North Cardinal direction and is associated with the water element and winter----which is the briefest summary I can give considering the importance of astrology and elemental symbols in Ancient Chinese culture. (My interest is casual and I am NOT a historian, but I find all depictions of mythos in present and modern interpretations fascinating.) This depiction is more of an interpretation rather than what is normally depicted. Eventually I want to draw at least the 4 Symbols, The White Tiger of the West, The Vermillion Bird of the East, and Azure Dragon of the South, and then MAYBE get to the gold dragon.

The Four Beasts are supposed to be based on the Chinese Zodiac, and they are: Tiger (Inmei), Horse (Gomei), Snake (Shimei), & Boar (Gaimei). There's one problem though: most of their designs don't resemble those animals at all. The only one who does is Shimei, and that's only because homegirl got a literal snake wrapped round her punani. The other 3 require some suspension of disbelief. Inmei might look like a tiger due to how his facial markings look like tiger stripes. But Gomei really does not look like a horse. You could maybe say his bangs look like horse's ears and his legs are long & thick like one. And Gaimei only resembles a boar due to his tusks, but otherwise, he's literally just an orc. Now I do like their designs, don't get me wrong. I like how they have a uniform theme but don't all wear the same clothes, how they're based on Jomon to Kofun period fashion/artifacts (especially Gomei, who is based on dogu), and how they all have a blue gem on their chest. They just don't look like zodiac animals lol.
