Sakura is the Senju princess promised to the second prince of the Uchiha house. Unfortunately, Sasuke was more interested in sowing his wild oats and being a brat prince then in being a proper fiancĂŠ. It is Itachi's decision to have his head of the royal guards be her escort as a means of keeping Sakura safe from the worst of the rumors.

âYou shouldnât scowl so much. The princess doesnât find it as charming as the kitchen maids do,â Itachi chastised.
Sasuke glared back at his brother, bristling from the admonishment. âWould you like to take my place and show me how its done, brother?â he sarcastically griped. âI donât see you surrendering your marital freedoms.â
âAs the first prince,â Itachi began calmly, âmy marriage was secured far earlier than yours. There is little freedom a toddler is entitled to.â
Sasuke glanced past Itachiâs shoulder to where the head of the knightâs order followed four paces back, calm and relaxed as ever. Without the worry of gossiping ears Sasuke refocused his attentions onto his brother. âI do not want to take tea with her. Canât you do it for me?â
âYou are the one who will be marrying the Senju princess. Do not forget her heritage or what is at stake here. She has shown impressive patience in putting up with your attitudes and the plethora of rumors that come attached to your name.â Itachiâs placating tone shifted into something sharper that gave Sasuke pause. âIf you were a coat youâd be threadbare and overworn by now. The fact that you havenât sired a bastard is a miracle in and of itself.â
ââŚYou were always the heir.â
âYou were always a prince, Sasuke, act like it.â
Itachi continued on the familiar garden path, taking with him the head of his knights and leaving Sasuke behind to scowl and bitch to his black heartâs content. The fact that Itachi loved his brother in spite of all he knew should have made him a saint, but instead it just made him foolish.
âHe will mature with time,â Itachi said to Kakashi. âUntil then would you please watch over the princess and keep her from the worst of it?â
Kakashi caught up beside Itachi and stoped with the first prince under the shaded branches of a flowering tree. There the falling blossoms would disguise their conspiratorial words.
âI suppose you couldnât afford the Senju as an enemy,â Kakashi chuckled in a tone as nonchalant as his posture. âMa, ma, I guess it canât be helped if the first prince asks me for a favor. Werenât you planning on replacing me anyway?â
Itachi sighed at Kakashiâs teasing. For being a Dukeâs son Kakashi did a good job of playing the role of the fool. No one who saw him, without knowing him, suspected him of any measure of excellence, but Itachi knew better. Only a special sort of person traded in a life of luxury for a blade and career of blood.
Kakashi would be a good person to trust the Senju princess to. Sasuke wouldnât bother so it seemed the responsibility fell to Itachi once more.
âI canât trust many others with this role. Could you see Shisui keeping his head straight around the princess?â
Kakashi smirked through his mask. âOh, is she a looker?â
âSasuke might gripe enough to make you think otherwise, but thatâs only because she hasnât thrown herself at him with her legs open.â
Kakashi chuckled. âOh dear, a pretty one with brains? This country might be in trouble after all.â
âPlease see that is isnât,â Itachi sighed.
Kakashi fell into a sloppy bow. âIf my prince asks it of me, how could I refuse?â
