I think Dean realised he was in love with Cas in season 8 when Cas showed him that he rewrote his own memories about purgatory because the idea that he had failed Cas was easier to bear than the knowledge that Cas consciously decided to not be with him, and to be clear what he changed his memories to was still tearing him apart but it was better than the truth, the truth would have put him on his knees and a part of him knew he had to stand up and keep going so it chose the lesser of two evils so to speak.

one million posts about how dean "traumatised" cas by "kicking" him out of the bunker but where's MY fic about cas pov in Purgatory where dean prayed to cas every single night for a whole year and was ignored everyday?

I'm joking but also I'm not coz I really really want cas pov in Purgatory! do u think he heard the prayers and thought, ok he survived today then....do u think he worried if a prayer was late? do u think he noticed how dean sounded....do u think he just understood dean's bamf-ness or did he leave because he couldn't bear to face dean? Esp after getting him trapped in purgatory (cas pov...he was supposed to kill dick roman... I'm sure he'd vastly prefer to b the only one stuck in Purgatory....)...Do u think dean mentioned having a vampire pal? Wait a minute... Rewatching s7 & s8 Cas episodes and I noticed something.

So in 7x23 Dean and Cas end up in purgatory. Here's their dialogue:

Later in 8x02:

So he changed ALL his memories about Cas.

He preferred not to think that Cas had abandoned him. He thought that he and Cas had fought together, but something had happened to Cas. Maybe he thought that Cas had been taken by the "gorilla-wolves" and maybe that's why he had interrogated them so much about Cas...

Yes we were robbed of Dean apologising to Cas in purgatory but oh my God, imagine if this man fell to his knees right after hugging Cas, his arms still holding onto the trench-coat and started apologising again right then and there. Repeating "i'm sorry, i'm so sorry, i forgive you" over and over again while looking up at Cas with these teary eyes of his. And when Cas tries to tell him that it's okay that Dean can get up, he just shakes his head and says that it wasn't fair of him to treat Cas like that that he needs to tell him his apology in person.

Sometimes I think that people don't understand that dean was searching for castiel in purgatory for a year. a solid year. in the show, it feels like a couple weeks, maybe a couple months, but it's a year.

dean winchester looked for castiel about the same amount of time dean and sam were looking for john. for the same amount of time he was with lisa. for roughly the amount of time a season is.

Dean searched high and low for him, only for Cas to leave him. And it traumatized Dean enough for Dean to rewrite his own memories.

Dean doesn't expect Cas to hang around because Castiel has set a precedent for leaving him.

Castiel often doesn't know that Dean wants him to stay, because he doesn't understand he's welcome.

this problem is made worse when cas is kicked out when human.
