Like ok guys we got the set up right. We got L doing some bullshit and showing up at Lights house because He Was Invited and spending time with him for rooting-out-Kira purposes and judiciously complimenting how smart and grown up he is (just like in canon lmao) but you know what I think that only ever was a foundation because I do think that Light's hatred for what L stands for and his fear of getting caught would be enough of a net to keep him from getting sucked into it. Of course once he loses his memories he would no longer have that to fall back on and instead would probably put his faith COMPLETELY in the hope that L will be able to see the truth that he is not Kira, aka putting his faith in L (also just like in canon) and being that disarmed in that position leaves him soooo vulnerable.

But the transition point!!! Coralflower brought up that L would absolutely abuse his power over Light while Light is in the cell (with some tasty tasty examples 👀) and ohhhh holy god oh my fucking god hhgk-

Listen!! L taking it upon himself to hand feed Light and justifying it by saying that Light is too smart to risk it!! L removing every single freedom Light could have possibly had - the freedom of movement, the freedom of privacy!! And yeah it's really annoying boy does it make Light hate him even if it also makes him warm inside during that first week where he has his memories because fuck you asshole I know what you're fucking doing. But when Light loses his memories!! And he's confused and lost and scared!! Like he still knows what L is doing. And the hatred doesn't just automatically go away, just like Misa's love didn't go away, but over the course of the fifty days it... morphs a little bit. It has the opportunity to change. He hates being helpless and he's scared but he's also getting used to relying on L. He's in fucking solitary confinement for something he thinks he didn't do, he starts craving interaction, any interaction, especially when L is being attentive and sweet instead of accusatory and punishing. Sometimes he forgets that being handfed is weird at all. And when L gets comfortable enough to start insinuating for something more, Light kind of wants it. He forgets why being wanted by L is bad.

48 year old L honing in on the Chief's pretty son with an intense gaze. 48 year old L watching Light read porn magazines dueing the surveillance arc while Soichiro is next to him. 48 year old L not switching cameras ehen Light (and only Light) showers. Just incase he catches something. 48 year old L creeping at Light at his school as a teacher and toying with Light once he has him in his cell. 48 year old L cuffing them together and never (and I mean never) taking them off for long. Soichiro helplessly watching as his son's gaze starts to linger on a man his age. As his son blushes and squirms in a way he never does with his girlfriend. As his son makes excuses to stay, even after the chain comes off and he's free to leave, a Kira caught.

His face turns a pale, ashy colour when he hears L mention Sayu one day. How much she takes after her brother. And he sees Light's face. Angry. Like he wants to punch L to hell and back. But Soichiro is also a cop. And he was also a boy. And he sees that flicker of jealousy that no one, except L, does.

He tries to keep Sayu safe, even after L is dead (his son held that man's body. He has never seen Light sound so devastated. He saw his son collapse onto his grave. If only he stayed longer, if only he lingered back, hidden...).

He doesn't succeed. Mello's men take her with ease.

I have class in like 20 minutes but I want to answer this ask soooo baddd so I'm gonna type as quick as I can and hope that I leave myself enough time to get there :')

Okie so I do think Sayu is safe from L's bullshit (past that first day with the cameras perhaps, when Light hadn't totally given away the game yet and she still held some Possibly Kira intrigue - if you want me to talk about how Light totally fucked up during the cameras let me know!) because she isn't interesting enough. Like yeah she's Lights sister and I definitely think she's got some emotional intelligence going for her but she doesn't have whatever Light's got going on so to L he's like top tier and she's like mid tier in terms of people he's interested in. Soichiro ranks higher than her 😭

Butttt Matsuda being fucking weird about her is canon! Actually @god-of-this-new-blog and I discussed this and basically what the result amounted to is when Sayu reaches the age Light was when L started creeping on him and just the same Matsuda starts creeping on her Soichiro's reaction to that shit can be adequately summarized with NOT AGAIN lmao. Which is fair this poor dad 😭😭 and then Mello rolls up 🫠

Anyway. Considering the fact that L was able to conceal the fact that Light was his main fucking suspect for months until they grab Misa in canon, I do think that 48 year old L's interest would not be very obvious. Like very well obfuscated. He KNOWS that he's not supposed to be indulging and he KNOWS that Soichiro would freak the fuck out and he absolutely understands why, he's just having a hard time giving a shit. From Soichiro's POV it's gonna seem like L's paying more or less the same amount of attention/suspicion to his whole family with the appropriate amount of extra for Light because he fits the profile already constructed really well. When Light reads porn Soichiro's gonna express his disappointment and then end up kind of agreeing when L contradicts that because 'yeah that does make sense we ARE dealing with a teenager :/ but still'. L's talking to Light at school because he's a suspect! L's inviting him into the task force because he's brilliant! Soichiro's not even gonna WITNESS the way that L devours Light with his eyeballs while he's in solitary. And the handcuffs? Well surely L is as uncomfortable with them as Soichiro is but he can't really think of other options either. When L starts trying to get Light to laugh during the day and giving him little things and having those typa we're the only people in the room conversations it's in a fatherly way right? A fatherly way? It would be weird if they DIDNT grow a little bit closer when they're together 24/7, but L always keeps a respectful distance anyway as far as Soichiro has seen. (Until the other shoe drops hehe.)

Light on the other hand would be worse at hiding it I think. I think he would be awkward and blushy :) I think if L teased him he might get reactive and possibly jealous before he catches himself or catches onto L's ploy, just like in canon. And Soichiro is... very concerned. And also feels a bit bad for L because that's gotta be awkward to fend off. Lmao

Light knows that objectively his and L’s relationship is wrong. L is thirty years his senior and his boss. Light has killed guys like that over and over for sleeping with girls practically the same age as him. But for some reason with L it’s different. Or more Light is different he isn’t some kid he knows better he’s mature, and he’s smart, he’s a genius, so obviously he can’t be the same as any other teen? He has to be different, better, more mature, because the other option isn’t possible. And yet when he’s 23 he sees 18 year olds as kids despite that he wasn’t a kid at that age.

L telling Soichiro about his sons to lure him into a false sense of security. How could L possibly do anything to Light when Light's barely older than his boys?

No no no no no gah listen L never mentioning SQUAT about his sons to anyone including Soichiro the whole time. Not when they first become friends. Not when Soichiro wrongly assumes that L is feeling paternal feelings about Light during the beginning of his in-person investigation. Not until he comes up with the handcuffs idea!!!! And he wants to do the handcuffs idea. And he really wants Soichiro to back him up on the handcuffs idea because guaranteed everyone is going to think it's weird in sketchy. So L soft-launches it by keeping Soichiro company in confinement for a bit and "sharing a bit more" about himself including his children. And then he's like "hey so I really want to let Light out of confinement and all because everyone else is really riding my ass about not being able to just keep him there forever but I also need to be able to keep an eye on him..."

L has been dead for a while. He's probably grosser and uglier in that stupid wooden coffin 6 feet under the ground. He wasn't good, he wasn't bad, Light thinks. But maybe that's just what L wants him to think.

They're visiting his grave again. Light and Misa. She looks at him like she knows, but how could she? She could never understand, even as she tucked herself by his side. His eyes fall back on the stone in front of them. "You miss him." She says quietly, "You miss him." He can't say anything to that. He does. L was a means to an end more than anything. "Maybe." He finally says.

There's more he could say. Maybe this is as honest as he can be, even with the one living person who has seen more of him than anyone else has. He could say how he hates what L did. He could say that L was everything he had for a while. He could say that he sometimes dreams of him. But he doesn't. There's no point in that. Her soulful, knowing eyes don't need him to. Misa Amane understands better than anyone else what happened between Light Yagami and L ⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️, even if she never saw it with her own eyes. She's perseptive like that, especially when others assume her to be the opposite.

She pulls him closer, even as he stays stoic. They stand there for another hour before returning to their home. It's almost dinner time, and they have a strawberry cake to get through after.

I have kept this in my inbox for 10 hours because it makes my brain stop every time. I have literally nothing to add to this. It's fantastic. I concede I give up attempting to actually respond I just need everyone to read it :') Dying. Dead. I need to give Light in his 20s a hug and wrap him up in a blanket burrito. I love that we've started thinking of the aftermath of this.
