Light lying to everyone except Ryuk Light lying to everyone except Ryuk!! And listen there was no mask to even be peeled away here like tbf part of the joy of lawlight is that L does manage to peel away at least some of the mask layer by layer but like. He dies before he gets through all of it. But Ryuk saw like barely a flicker of it in the very first episode and then after that the only ONLY times Light lied to Ryuk was when by proxy he was lying to himself - and even then, his self-lies are so ass backwards and convoluted and contradictory and even ridiculous that it is so, so easy to see through them if you have even the slightest idea of how to be looking. That mask was never even there for Ryuk. Was it because he can't be killed and so therefore did not have the same weaknesses turned pitfalls that L was subject to? Not even. Perhaps this immunity would have helped L in reaching his final goal, but Ryuk never needed extra time to get around the roadblocks, because they weren't even there for him!! Light never hid from Ryuk FUCK

And and - no wait anon listen to this shit - and Light fucking trusted Ryuk dude. No listen that shit is so important to me. Helloooo!! Here's a small doodle of both L and Naomiii!! I have read the novel, in fact, I own a physical novel myself. It's the only piece of physical death note media I own aside from the one shot manga and a death note a friend gave me for my birthday. It's a great novel!

His head tilts slightly. He blinks slowly, absorbing it.

At first, he doesn’t say much—but inside, he’s spiraling. 

He’s used to reading people, but this? This is emotional territory, and it makes his heart ache.

He gets very still, then speaks quietly: “What part of it is hurting you the most?” Not judgmental. Not dismissive. Just curiosity laced with concern.

He never forgets what she says. Later, he’ll find ways to quietly take burdens off her plate. Without asking. Without announcing it. Just… done.

He doesn’t say “You’re a good mom.” He shows her—by making sure she has space, time, and him listening.

Light Yagami

That sentence stuns him. 

It’s the first time he’s seen her falter, and it shakes him.

He immediately wants to “fix it”—suggests routines, changes, offers to help more, even researches parenting burnout at 2am.

But after the solutions, he realizes it’s deeper. And it’s human.

Light’s used to being flawless in front of others—so when he sees her being raw, he doesn’t know whether to cry or hug her.

Eventually, he puts an arm around her and just whispers, “You’re allowed to feel that way. It doesn’t make you less of a mother. Just human.” 

And maybe, just maybe, it’s the first time he lets her see him drop the perfect mask too.

Immediate protective mode. Not a "I need to protect the kid from her" rather a "I need to protect her from the world."

“Who’s not helping you? Who’s not pulling their weight? Because I swear to God—”

But once he sees she’s not angry, just tired, he stops. And his heart just… drops.

He hugs her tight. No words at first. Then: “You don’t have to be supermom all the damn time. I got you. You’re allowed to fall apart. I’ll carry it.”

From then on, he steps in more. Doesn’t wait for her to ask. Cooks, does late-night feedings, handles tantrums. Because she needs rest.

He offers to take the night shift, maybe suggests they get a sitter soon, a date night, something normal.

“You don’t have to love every second of it to still be a badass mom. It’s okay to say it sucks. I still think you’re the best one out there.”

He pauses. Completely. Doesn’t blink. Like he’s buffering.

“Do you believe that saying it makes you less capable?” he asks, softly.

He’s not trying to be cold—he’s trying to understand the emotional math behind it.

When she tells him she’s just exhausted, overwhelmed, and tired of always being the calm one, it clicks.

Later that night, he rearranges everything—builds a new routine, finds ways to automate tasks, introduces more structure to take pressure off her.

He brings her tea, wraps her in a blanket, and lets her cry quietly while he strokes her hair, his fingers trembling slightly—because her pain is new terrain, and he’s scared of not being enough to fix it.

Now, there is ANOTHER ranking system aside from the chart, using the Death god levels 1-12. 1 being incredibly powerful, 12 being low. Ryuk is at a 6, Rem is at an 4. 1 being Nu, an all eye shinigami that honestly could probably kill me by staring at me. The only shinigami not ranked is the King. (My husband theorized its Death itself-)

I made a shinigami for a DND campaign (With a Death Note user) using these charts to give me a branching point into homebrew. He is an alligator shinigami named Mamoru; Nicknamed Ru or M&M. He is mostly scaly, the bottom half of his jaw is all alligator skull bone. He has thin, bat like wings with a few rips in them. He does carry a scythe *because I fucking love them.* He has a habit of clicking his jaw together in a "chomp" noise when he's irritated. He is very goofy and friendly, (I made him sound like Shidoh from the Anime) Really likes oreos and M&M's (specifically double stuffed or mint chocolate chip. He hates peanut m&m's, bad texture). He tends to scurry around like a little... well- alligator, but stands up and flies as normal. (He does this to be funny- it's a little unnerving) He's very attached to his notebook user and tends to be either 1) on them (head resting on them or flopping down on them) or 2) right behind them.

Ahem.... I think Tumblr ate my last attempt at sending this, so... yay. And expanding on it, ehe.

48 year old L honing in on the Chief's pretty son with an intense gaze. 48 year old L watching Light read porn magazines dueing the surveillance arc while Soichiro is next to him. 48 year old L not switching cameras ehen Light (and only Light) showers. Just incase he catches something. 48 year old L creeping at Light at his school as a teacher and toying with Light once he has him in his cell. 48 year old L cuffing them together and never (and I mean never) taking them off for long. Soichiro helplessly watching as his son's gaze starts to linger on a man his age. As his son blushes and squirms in a way he never does with his girlfriend. As his son makes excuses to stay, even after the chain comes off and he's free to leave, a Kira caught.

His face turns a pale, ashy colour when he hears L mention Sayu one day. How much she takes after her brother. And he sees Light's face. Angry. Like he wants to punch L to hell and back. But Soichiro is also a cop. And he was also a boy. And he sees that flicker of jealousy that no one, except L, does.

He tries to keep Sayu safe, even after L is dead (his son held that man's body. He has never seen Light sound so devastated. He saw his son collapse onto his grave. If only he stayed longer, if only he lingered back, hidden...).

He doesn't succeed. Mello's men take her with ease.

I have class in like 20 minutes but I want to answer this ask soooo baddd so I'm gonna type as quick as I can and hope that I leave myself enough time to get there :')

Okie so I do think Sayu is safe from L's bullshit (past that first day with the cameras perhaps, when Light hadn't totally given away the game yet and she still held some Possibly Kira intrigue - if you want me to talk about how Light totally fucked up during the cameras let me know!) because she isn't interesting enough. Like yeah she's Lights sister and I definitely think she's got some emotional intelligence going for her but she doesn't have whatever Light's got going on so to L he's like top tier and she's like mid tier in terms of people he's interested in. Soichiro ranks higher than her 😭

Butttt Matsuda being fucking weird about her is canon! Actually @god-of-this-new-blog and I discussed this and basically what the result amounted to is when Sayu reaches the age Light was when L started creeping on him and just the same Matsuda starts creeping on her Soichiro's reaction to that shit can be adequately summarized with NOT AGAIN lmao. Which is fair this poor dad 😭😭 and then Mello rolls up 🫠

Anyway. Considering the fact that L was able to conceal the fact that Light was his main fucking suspect for months until they grab Misa in canon, I do think that 48 year old L's interest would not be very obvious. Like very well obfuscated. He KNOWS that he's not supposed to be indulging and he KNOWS that Soichiro would freak the fuck out and he absolutely understands why, he's just having a hard time giving a shit. From Soichiro's POV it's gonna seem like L's paying more or less the same amount of attention/suspicion to his whole family with the appropriate amount of extra for Light because he fits the profile already constructed really well. When Light reads porn Soichiro's gonna express his disappointment and then end up kind of agreeing when L contradicts that because 'yeah that does make sense we ARE dealing with a teenager :/ but still'. L's talking to Light at school because he's a suspect! L's inviting him into the task force because he's brilliant! Soichiro's not even gonna WITNESS the way that L devours Light with his eyeballs while he's in solitary. And the handcuffs? Well surely L is as uncomfortable with them as Soichiro is but he can't really think of other options either. When L starts trying to get Light to laugh during the day and giving him little things and having those typa we're the only people in the room conversations it's in a fatherly way right? A fatherly way? It would be weird if they DIDNT grow a little bit closer when they're together 24/7, but L always keeps a respectful distance anyway as far as Soichiro has seen. (Until the other shoe drops hehe.)

Light on the other hand would be worse at hiding it I think. I think he would be awkward and blushy :) I think if L teased him he might get reactive and possibly jealous before he catches himself or catches onto L's ploy, just like in canon. And Soichiro is... very concerned. And also feels a bit bad for L because that's gotta be awkward to fend off. Lmao
