Tessa Virtue on school and working out
Marcia McMillan for Women of Influence 9/30/20
Marcia: It’s been such a strange time for all of us, and I think that one of the things that has helped a lot of people is having some sort of routine to structure their day. So do you have one and can you describe it for us?
Tessa: I try. It helps having school now. I'm studying, doing my EMBA at Smith, and that helps because there's always a purpose. There's a task, and there's an overarching sort of goal that I'm working towards. The graduation in May ‘22 is there, and I know, you know, once I set that goal it's a challenge, and I can sort of weave my way and navigate that a little more naturally.
But i'm trying to work out. My sister is teaching me virtually or sometimes now that we're in the same city we can see each other and
Marcia: You're trying to work out?
Tessa: I'm trying- trying to find a structure of working out
Marcia: How many times have you been to the Olympics, and you are telling us that you are-
Tessa: But it was my job for such a long time- I have to admit that I sort of, the pendulum swung, and i went in the other direction. Anything that made me feel like an athlete, I just resisted. And now I feel like I'm at a point where I can realize ok, moving my body, exploring that feeling, sweating feels good again, and I do know that I feel better mentally too when when I'm active.
Marcia: Do you work out every day?
Tessa: No- no no no
Marcia: Really?
Tessa: I just took like three months off of working out in in total because I think my body just needed a break, and now I feel like invigorated and ready to to get going again, but it's kind of fun because not everything needs to be functional, you know. It's not only to be the best ice dancer in the world now. I can I can move for the sake of it. I can try boxing or pilates or different kinds of things that I wasn't able to do before when everything was so regimented and so structured
5:11
shit is just so good. I love seeing the way the universe lines things up for me. I am insightful and able to see clearly why things happen the way they happen and am appreciative of it all.
I've always had a weird thing about the time 5:11. For some reason, when I'm very stressed and suddenly there's a moment's peace? I look up at the time and it's 5:11. I've woken up from nightmares, checked the time, it's 5:11. I've been stressing through homework until I decide to take a break, look up, and it's 5:11. I've felt the lull of conversation in a room, looked at the time, and it's 5:11. It isn't anything big. Just stillness. Two times a day, when I need it most. Is it Them? If so why?
One day the clocks will stop at 5:11 and when time restarts you won’t be carried along with it.
Well I guess I’m such a fuckin’ dad then. I can’t even pick up on dad jokes.
