Nevi woke up and threw the covers off of herself he hair was a mess and her face was disgruntled but who could blame her with her alarm sounding off before she was ready to leave dream-land.
She marched into the bathroom to brush her teeth and sort herself out so she would have enough brain function to pick out what to wear to school. She passed her hamster Mr.Funnyfeet on the way to her dresser and he was awake and digging through the wood chips in his cage, Nevi couldn't help but smile.
"Good morning Mr. Funnyfeet." Nevi said in a sing-song tone and Mr. Funnyfeet looked up to squeak at her but that wasn't what happened instead came a quiet hello, and Nevi had to do a double take. Had her hamster just spoken English to her?
Mr. Funnyfeet had the most panicked expression on his little hamster face.
"Did you just say hello to me Funnyfeet?" Nevi question and the hamster tried to squeak to cover his tracks but instead came more spoken words.
"Yes I did." Said Mr. Funnyfeet and Nevi was besides herself. Who had ever heard of a talking hamster?
"I can't lie! I can't lie!" Exclaimed Mr. Funnyfeet and Nevi found his little voice quite funny to listen too despite how distressed the little hamster sounded.
"It's okay Mr. Funnyfeet, we're best friends you don't have to lie to me." Nevi said as she opened up the cage and took the small hamster out, and at first Mr. Funnyfeet was sure he'd be killed like he had been told would happen if a human found out hamsters could articulate in human languages but all he got was reassuring pets from Nevi.
"You aren't going to hurt me?" Mr. Funnyfeet questioned and Nevi had a very puzzled look on her face.
"Why would I hurt you we're friends?" Nevi asked and Mr. Funnyfeet was perplexed Nevi wasn't acting like the type of humans that he had been taught about. She sounded so kind, sincere, and innocent.
"We are told to never speak human dialect. Humans enslaved us and made us their lesser trapped in cages." Mr. Funnyfeet uttered and Nevi thought about what he tiniest friend had said.
"I never thought of it that way." Nevi said in a sad tone feeling bad for taking part in the oppression of the hamster race.
"But you don't seem so bad." Mr, Funnyfeet said and Nevi thought about the fact that he couldn't lie so she believed him.
"Want to help me pick out what to wear to school?" Nevi asked and then added "Unless you want to leave?"
Mr, Funnyfeet was very aware of what happened to freed hamsters they didn't live very long and he liked Nevi as long as she didn't put him back in the cage he didn't have a reason to leave.
"Okay." He said and Nevi smiled so big and placed the hamster on her bed so she could riffle through her clothes.
She came back with a lengthy black top and pink leggings, she was surprised that Mr. Funnyfeet had not ran away.
Mr, Funnyfeet looked over the outfit and he honestly didn't know anything about clothing and he told Nevi that but also said that in his opinion it looked fine. Nevi was happy regardless.
As Nevi got dressed Mr. Funnyfeet stayed silent and when Nevi turned around to see if he was still there the little hamster had a worried look on his face.
"What's wrong?" Asked Nevi concern in her eyes.
"You are a good human but I am worried that not everyone you know will be." Said Mr. Funnyfeet and Nevi thought about it.
"I can keep a secret." Said Nevi with a slight smile. "I haven't even told my little brother that the tooth fairy is just mommy." Said Nevi and she was very proud of herself for that.
Mr. Funnyfeet smiled he knew that he could have ruined things for all hamsters all over the world but he trusted his friend. Nevi was a good human and he would keep her.
