not crazy (just a little unwell)
I’m insane we’re all insane, here we go. I wrote this in class so it’s not much but I had to let out the feelings somewhere.

Of all the ways he expected to enter the Diaz house, this wasn’t one of them.
“Woah, hey!” Buck scrambles back, only barely managing to catch the baseball bat before it crashes into his skull. “Eddie, it’s just me!”
Buck uses his grip on the bat to tug his best friend into the faint light coming from the shut blinds, and even though Eddie resists, Buck’s hands fall slack the minute he catches sight of his fear-stricken expression, eyes wild with his hair practically ripped free.
Because that’s not a look he has ever seen on Eddie Diaz — not even when he was bleeding out on a random street in Los Angeles, with no way of knowing if he’ll make it back home. He’s never seen Eddie’s normally-warm eyes so cold with stark fear, so unlike the ones Buck’s come to love more than life itself.
“Oh,” Eddie whispers, sounding like he’s choking as he stumbles back at the first sight of Buck’s face in the darkness. “Oh, fuck, Buck I’m so sorry. I didn’t— I swear I didn’t— Buck, I’m sorry, just—”
Buck moves to find the lamp switch, flicking it on to cast the room in a yellow glow. Eddie flinches back, eyes big and wild in his face as his gaze tracks every inch of Buck’s body, the end of the bat shaking in his hands.
Buck has never seen him shake like that, either.
Buck knows what he’s looking for as his gaze roams Buck’s body desperately and nearly trips over his own feet to relieve him. “Hey, no harm done, you didn’t hurt me. You couldn’t hurt me, Eddie, I know that,” he soothes, letting the bat slip from his hand as proof. Eddie yanks it back to him, wrapping sweaty palms around the wood as he clutches it tight. “Eddie, look at me. I’m okay, you didn’t hurt me.”
Eddie gives him a shaky nod, but he keeps himself at arms distance from Buck. “I-I heard the lock, and I—”
He thought he was in danger.
Buck curses his own stupidity at using his key so late at night when Eddie wasn’t expecting him. “It’s just me. You’re safe, Eddie, I promise.”
The adrenaline leaves Buck feeling shaky as his racing heartbeat calms, but he pays it no heed as he sets his keys on the entry table. He slips off his jacket as he watches his best friend suck in breath after breath, and tries to figure out a plan to get Eddie to open up.
He decides to play it by ear as he tosses the jacket to the side, reaching for Eddie.
Eddie flinches away from him, his face turned to the side as he stares at Buck’s hand like he’s never seen it before. Buck’s heart falls to his knees but he doesn’t reach out again.
“Eddie,” he says in a low voice. “It’s just me.”
Buck groans at the sound of his phone ringing, the pre-dawn light filtering into his empty loft and over his even emptier bed.
The name flashing on his screen startles him a little, answering while trying to untangle himself from his sheets.
“Eds?”
Except it’s not Eddie who answers, it’s Chris, tired and scared.
“Buck?”
“Chris? Buddy, what’s wrong?”
Alert now, Buck trips out of bed and rushes to grab a jacket as he nearly flings himself down the stairs for his shoes and keys, he’s nearly at his Jeep when Buck hears it.
Eddie. Sobbing.
“It’s Dad, something’s…wrong.”
“Alright Buddy, I’ll be there soon, okay. Just stay in your room.”
“Okay.”
Buck speeds, breaking every traffic law to get to Eddie and Chris, get to them, as fast as he can.
He jumps out of his Jeep while it’s still running and comes through Eddie’s front door as quietly as he can. He sees Chris poke his head out of his room as he passes by and he rubs a hand over his curls.
“Hey, you did the right thing okay. Your Dad’s gonna be okay.”
Chris nods and Buck heads down to Eddie’s room, knocking slightly so he doesn’t scare him.
Eddie looks up, face wrecked, knuckles bloody, and gripping a baseball bat and Buck’s heart absolutely breaks.
He falls to his knees in front of Eddie and grips his hands from where they’re white knuckling the bat. He tugs softly once and Eddie looks up at him, with the most beautiful hazel eyes, full of sadness and despair.
“Evan,” Eddie sobs out. “I’m scared.”

Everyone and their mothers have already written a variation of this fic, but what is fanfic if not all of us writing variations of the same thing? Also, my internet is out so I wrote, edited, and posted this from my phone, so, apologies for any formatting weirdness that may incur.
read on ao3
Linda appears at Eddie’s side just as a call wraps up, and he’s already got an easy smile on his face as he turns towards her, an easy smile that drops when he sees her expression.
“What is it?” He demands, sitting up straighter in his chair.
“I got a call, Eddie, asking for you personally. It’s Buck.”
Eddie’s breath catches in his chest. He knows she can patch the call through to his station but he’s already up, crossing the distance between their desks and fumbling her headset on.
“Buck?” He asks, breathless like he’d run a marathon.
“Hey, Eddie,” Buck says, and Eddie’s heart clenches because he sounds weak.
“Buck, what’s happening, where are you?” He demands, scanning the screen in front of him, but Linda hadn’t put in any information. “I’ll get an RA unit out to you—”
“I don’t need 911, Eddie, just need you.”
I'm seeing some cool posts about the bracelet Buck gave Taylor coming back into play with Buck and Eddie but many don't seem to know much about it's abilities beyond 'it's a tracking bracelet' so I thought I'd help!
It's basically a panic alarm in jewellery.
It's not a continuous tracker/beacon like a find my phone app. Once it's used to send it a distress call the GPS is continous in case of a kidnapping/hurt but moving situation, but it's not a all the time check where the other half is sort of a thing.
Their website summarises it this way:
"They look like everyday accessories but they are actually safety devices. There is a button hidden on the backside. Double-click the button to immediately text up-to five emergency contacts a link to your GPS location & to let them know you need help. Enable the free 9-1-1 feature (US only) to connect with 9-1-1 dispatchers."
So I could maybe see it being made into a keyring for Christopher so he can press it for an instant message and GPS to be sent to Buck, Eddie and dispatch. That could become part of all sorts of cool plotlines with buddie acting as coparents to help save Christopher.
It could be used between Buddie but some of the (very cool) ideas going around don't fit with the bracelets tech-ability and I figure if they had wanted to make their own guidelines they could have invented their own Hildy version rather than use and show a real and easily identifiable one like Invisawear. (Also the product has used being on 911 as a promo thing so makes sense to be realistic although writers ultimately can do as they like).
If you're curious about Invisawear's safety features and items they have an insta if you search the bran name or the main website is HERE
Also, note that Buck spent $149 on Taylor for Christmas. Overcompensating because he's not as all in as he thinks he should be, maybe?
My ramblings to @strangerthanjonathan on discord:
Buck does something dangerous on a call where Eddie is the dispatcher
Eddie, who has already had trouble sleeping, has a nightmare that night that reminds him of the shooting and seeing buck covered in blood (which makes sense cause it was buck he had to listen to almost die over the fucking radio earlier and he could do nothing about it). Then he wakes up screaming and he’s on edge and it’s like 3 in the morning but he’s like ‘may as well get up ig’ and he gets ready and goes out in the kitchen for some coffee, sits down on the couch to try and watch tv or something, anything to keep his mind busy, but he dozes off and wakes up in a panic because he heard a noise and he grabs the bat and he swings but it’s Chris and he barely missed him and he’s shattered a window or something and Christopher is crying and he yells ‘dad stop PLEASE!’ And Eddie realizes what’s happened and he backs away slowly with the bat gripped in his hand and he sinks to the ground against the wall and he’s crying and all he can think is ‘buck. Need buck’ so he chokes out ‘c-call Buck, Chris. Get Buck’ and he just is wracked with sobs and Christopher ambles over to the house phone and dials buck’s number that he knows by heart and he’s trembling a little and staring at his dad across the room and all buck needs is to hear Chris whisper out ‘buck?’ And hear Eddie’s cries in the background and he’s immediately leaving Taylor in the middle of some nice late-night date to be with his boys and then he shows up to Christopher standing at the end of the hallway, half hidden by his bedroom door and he looks so scared but when he sees buck he feels relieved and buck’s heart breaks at the sight of his boys like this, Christopher terrified of his own dad and Eddie having a full on crisis on the floor of the living room. Then buck kneels in front of Eddie and he’s talking to him softly and Eddie looks up and all he can see is blood and then it’s not just buck covered in blood, it’s his teammate in Afghanistan, and it’s Chris, and it’s that little boy from the well that he almost died saving, and there’s so much blood and then he’s sobbing, falling apart in buck’s arms and buck is just…. Dumbstruck, bc where tf did this come from? He knew Eddie wasn’t well but Eddie didn’t breakdown like this, eddie was always the stronger one of the two of them and god now he has to be the strong one and he has to protect eddie and he has to protect Chris and then then he gets Chris carted off to Hen’s or Carla’s for the night and he has eddie tucked in bed, still clinging to him, with his arms wrapped around him, and he wakes up the next morning to eddie softly snoring on top of him and he *finally* looks like he’s at peace and he knows, obviously, things aren’t fixed. But they’re okay for right now and he’ll take ‘right now’ and then he realizes he left Taylor and hadn’t once thought of calling her for help and gee, isn’t that interesting? And Taylor calls the next day like ‘wtf ???’ And buck is like ‘I… have to stay with Eddie for a while’ and shes like ‘how long is a while’
‘I don’t really have an answer for that’
And this is the wrench
*slaps Eddie* this boy can fit so much unresolved trauma
on the off chance that eddie does not take chris with him to texas and leaves him with buck instead, i will be irreversibly convinced that the writers room now gets all their (good) ideas from ao3 and that when t1m m1n3ar made *that* comment about fanfiction he was either
a) taking about himself
b) had just finished reading some and was offended by how much better they were compared to his own writing
(i will also be thinking this if there is one single phone call between buck and eddie while he’s in texas)
(and of course if eddie tells his parents about the will)
