Outlander 8.10 (And the World Was All Around Us)
such a normal amount of awkwardness for two people who have been friends for a decade btw. such a normal amount. they’re normal about each other i promise.

I'm not implying anything. I'm putting you on notice. I will find out exactly what happened with Ryan. And if you had anything to do with it–
the tactile way Dean remembers or longs for Cas' touch
Gunpowder Tim Vs The Moon Kaiser
This was a hard one but I think I managed to make it at least passably readable! :’D
Mechanisms Ambigrams Brian/Merlin • Ashes/Hades • The Toy Soldier as Jessica Law • Gunpowder Tim Vs The Moon Kaiser • TBC…?
[Image: an ambigram that reads “Gunpowder Tim Vs The Moon Kaiser” in both rotations, dark brown on a grungy, tan backdrop. The text is sharp, with curving flourishes, gear teeth, and crosshairs to dot the letter i. The upper text is decorated with a white circle made to look like one of Tim’s mechanical eyes, trailed by his signature PCB-like makeup; on the bottom, the same white circle has been made to look like the moon, trailed by impact lines. End ID.]
Beginning of 8.10:
DEAN: Right. Okay, well, then, what the hell do we do now? SAM: That depends. It depends on you. On whether or not you're done with [Benny].
End of 8.10:
DEAN: You know what, man? I got this. You go. SAM: What? DEAN: Don't you have a girl to get back to? SAM: Yeah. I guess I do. Um… Since when are you on the Amelia bandwagon? DEAN: I don't know. I'm just tired of all the fighting. And, you know, maybe I'm a little bit jealous. I could never separate myself from the job like you could. Hell, maybe it's time for at least one of us to be happy.
Dean just continuously is the better man in their season 8 conflicts.
Dean is consistent in his application of his hunter code, agreeing to hunt Benny if he's killing people, but refusing to participate in a witch hunt. Meanwhile, Sam jumps from defending people like Lenore, Madison, Jack Montgomery, Jesse, and (very recently) Kate, to an inconsistent distrust and aggression toward Benny.
Dean doesn’t lose his temper when Sam betrays his trust by hunting Benny. He remains cool headed and makes every effort to reason calmly with Sam and Martin without compromising his moral position.
Sam becomes complicit in Martin’s assault on Dean by agreeing to chain Dean up to prevent him from interfering with their witch hunt, and Dean doesn’t throw it in Sam's face even once even though he would have every right to do so. He doesn't bring it up even as Sam hurls rage at him for a spoofed text that prevented him from murdering Dean's friend.
Dean admits to being envious of Sam's ability to separate himself from the job, while Sam can't admit to himself or Dean that his actions with Benny were clearly driven by jealousy.
Dean apologizes for his part in his and Sam's conflict even when Sam won’t apologize for trying to kill Dean's friend, won't apologize for going behind Dean's back, won’t actually hear Dean out as far as what happened to Martin because it doesn't align with his narrative, and won’t admit that a single other thing he did was wrong.
Sam presents ultimatums, the first of which is a demand for Dean to never speak about Sam abandoning him again. Dean doesn't predicate a relationship between the two of them on whether or not Sam always thinks happy thoughts—not even when Sam outright says he wants to kill someone Dean cares about.
While Sam demands Dean choose between Sam and Benny, Dean tells Sam to go back to Amelia.
Dean shows personal growth and an ability to reflect, reevaluating his stance on Sam abandoning the hunter lifestyle. He recognizes that wanting normality in of itself isn't a reflection on Sam's morals, even if he doesn't agree with how Sam went about it. He admits his own personal struggles with guilt and grief and responsibility clouded his judgement, when Sam can't admit those things clouded his own judgement when it comes to his treatment of the people around him.
While they're both worried about Cas, Dean assures Sam that he can handle the tablet and whatever is affecting Cas on his own and tells him to go and pursue the normal life he wants. Meanwhile, even a Sam planning to part ways with Dean still wants license to decide who he associates with.
And the thing is? I think the fact that Dean is the better man in these conflicts only serves to fill Sam with more pain he can't face. It makes him feel more undeserving.
