One thing I miss about computers in the 90s is the basic, boring games that came with the OS. Like solitaire and kyodai mahjong. Minesweeper. They just... did what they said, and the most ‘flashy’ they got was the fireworks at the end, or the teeny subtle animations on the backs of the solitaire cards.
I’ve been setting my parents up with a new PC and it’s struck me how those little things are just not really a feature of modern home computing. The crappy games. Basic, clean functionality. My dad’s mahjong game (he already had to adjust to a different type when making the XP--> win 7 switch on the old computer) isn’t available on Win10, and I’ve been trying to find a replacement and every game is so gaudy and flashy and distracting. He ends up accidentally clicking on ads, or not being able to just start a new game or exit without having to hunt for the menu hidden behind some design element.
It’s like having to go to Vegas to play when really you just want a crappy pier amusement arcade with those 2p machines.
