Does Anyone knows how to unlocked the novel stories?
"the 9th School Wonder"
There's a new rumor going around, and it's called "The Girl who was spirited away."
People say that she fell in love with a ghost, and would often walk around the school in search of his presence. The ghost heard her longing, and stole her away from the living so that they could be with each other, forever.
Now, you can hear her voice echoing through the school hallways during sunset, saying "I'm sorry" to those who she left behind.
Sayaka hates this rumor the most.
(Kureha, kureha x misa, HEAVY SPOILERS regarding Kureha's Heavenly Ending, please read with caution, 1.4k words)
"And that's all for today. Please make sure to hand in your Career Path sheet to me after lunch tomorrow."
The school bells rings out about the grounds, and Sayaka's classmates all give a quiet cheer. Some of them quickly pack their bags, either ready to go back home or head somewhere else. The few that remain hang among each other, discussing their homework, their Career Path, and the newest rumor.
The rumor of "The Girl who was spirited away".
"Hey, did you know?"
A girl leans forward to her, eyes sparkling with interest as she lowers her voices to a hushed whisper.
"Apparently, a girl from this school disappeared recently."
Yes, she knows. Knows it very well because the person that disappeared was her best friend, but it doesn't seem as if this classmate has realized it just yet. Hasn't realized the vase of flowers placed on the table behind her, meant to mourn the dead, her dearest friend.
"It's said that she fell in love with a ghost, a dead man. Driven mad by longing, she killed herself to join him on the other side."
And it seems as if there has been a new variant to the tale.
Sayaka hates this one the most so far.
Noticing her unenthusiasthism, her classmate questions her. "What's wrong? Aren't you usually excited about stories like this?"
She purses her lips and just as she contemplates on stopping the girl before she could continue any further with the wretched tale, a loud voice booms across the classroom.
"Kanao!"
Another classmate of hers comes up frantically behind Kanao and quickly shuts her up–grabbing her by the shoulders and hoisting her away, chair clattering along and creating a chaotic noise not unlike the thoughts in Sayaka's head.
"Ow, ow! Hiyori! What do you think you're doing?!"
Hiyori groans, "You idiot! Do you not know anything?!"
She shoots Sayaka a worried look, but all Sayaka does is look back at her with a bitter smile.
"I'm fine."
Kanao struggles against the vice grip on her shoulder as Hiyori attempts to drag her away, but ultimately fails. Sayaka hears her bemoaning and questioning her friend as she's dragged out of sight, wondering what was going on?
Hiyori ushers her friend away for good to explain the situation while Sayaka watches them with envy, and that envy only grows into a dizzying sullenness as she feels pitiful eyes stare at her from every direction in the classroom.
She doesn't want that, it makes her feel sick. The one they should feel be bad for is Misa, not her.
But she doesn't want to think about it. Unfortunately, her main distraction has been taken away, after having been freed from cram school for the first time in a long while. There's not much else she can worry about except for her dead friend, and the Career Path Survey beneath her desk.
"Oh right, the Career Path Survey."
She reaches under her desk and takes out sheet of paper, every section filled up properly with all the needed information they had requested, including her first university of choice, Seigen University.
Staring at it, she feels compelled to pick up the eraser beside her. Her hand raises it to the surface of the paper and contemplates on erasing that one lone answer, but stops. She thinks and thinks again, as indecisive as flickering lights. It serves as an itch she can't get rid of and before she knows it, it's twilight, and everybody else has left except her.
Sayaka looks back at the vase of corpse flowers behind her, and pictures Misa smiling back at her before waving goodbye.
She should get going.
Slowly, she starts to pack her bag. Hesitates as she picks up her Career Path Survey before folding it neatly and tucking it into her pocket. Watching as the edges crinkle, she sighs.
"Goodness, I'm quite hopeless aren't I?"
At this rate, she'll be spirited away herself.
"Hey, Misa. Would I be able to see you again if that happens?"
The thought itself doesn't seem too bad. More than that, it's tempting.
Sayaka slings her bag over her shoulders before heading home. The light of the sunset saturates the hallways and as always, she hears the soft voices of her teachers talking over in the distance, the chatter of the last remaining students heading home, and the cry of a dog.
"Looks like sensei's dog is angry again."
But that animal-like cry only grows louder.
Something's wrong.
It takes her a few minutes to notice as she makes her way to the second floor, realizing that all she can hear now are the sounds of a crying animal, and nothing else.
It's loud, so so so loud and it's cries are as frantic as ever as the world seems to mute itself entirely.
And abruptly, even the crying stops. And everything falls silent.
It's a strange phenomenon, and before Sayaka can stop in her tracks to ponder it, she hears a new sound.
Kara...kara...
She feels her blood run cold at the sound of a sword being dragged across the floor.
Kara...kara...
She knows this tale, it's Kara Kara-san.
With every sound that echoes in this now desolate hallway, she feels the hairs on her arms prick up in cold fear, and feels a shiver crawl down her neck when she feels Kara Kara-san get even closer.
It'll be okay, she thought. She just doesn't need to look behind.
Kara...kara...
She feels an icy breath on her neck and hears the words;
"I'm sorry."
"..."
"I'm sorry I took her away from you."
Rumors be damned. Sayaka no longer cares about them as she turns around to face the supposed bloodthirsty killer of the famous tale, but sees no one.
There is no one there at all.
"Kureha?"
He sees Misa wave at him from afar and feels his supposedly dead heart beat quicker at the mere sight of her. Kureha smiles and hastens his step–if only to reach her a little faster.
"Is there something wrong? You look a little worried."
He places his palm to the back of his neck awkwardly, "Well, I suppose you could say that."
She nods in understanding and doesn't press him for answers, instead opting to take things in stride as they go–both his words, and his hand.
And when he feels her palm press up against his own, he feels warmth surging through his being, even if her own body had already gone cold from her death, no trace of warmth ever to be found again.
But even so, just her being there...fulfills him. Makes him feel alive.
And when she turns back to smile at him with the same subtle radiance she had when he first saw her, he feels guilt well up in his chest in that very moment.
'I'm sorry I couldn't protect you.'
He keeps those thoughts to himself.
Misa tugs him along, "You said you wanted me to meet with your friend right? If we don't go now we might be late."
He tightens his hold on her hand, feeling grateful for her intervention, else his thoughts may have spiralled deeper. It would have been dangerous.
Yes, she's as good as dead as him now, but there isn't much he can do to change that. All he can do right now, is make sure she's as happy as she can be every day.
"Hey, Kureha."
They're walking side-by-side holding hands, looking like any ordinary couple you'd find on the streets. If anyone could see them at all, that is.
"When Hinagiku gets better, I want to talk with her."
"Oh?"
He vaguely recalls the sight of Hinagiku clawing at the walls earlier today, only stopping to look at him as he entered the locked room. Instead of screeching at him like she usually would, all she did was make soft sobs as she looked at him mutely. It was a sign that her psyche has improved, somewhat.
There's hope. There's a chance she could get better, so what Misa suggested is not completely out of the question.
"She's your family, shouldn't I get to know you even better?"
"When you say it like that it sounds as if you're keen on learning about my younger mishaps."
"Oh wait whaaaaat? How could that be..."
She averts her eyes away in an attempt to mask her intentions, but he catches on quickly and chuckles.
"Well," She brushes it off and keeps talking. "She's important to you after all, of course I would want to talk to her."
"Thank you."
As always, his feelings slip out of his mouth in the form of words without restraint.
"Let's keep helping Hinagiku as much as we can."
She looks at him in the eye and he sees a light only she could ever possess shine in her eyes. It's breathtaking, he thinks dully.
Till something greater beyond death do them apart.
"first kiss problems"
"Don't you dare run away." Grabbing him by the cloak, Koyo holds onto Kureha with renewed conviction.
"That's right, tell us everything!" Eager to know more, Sena pressed the advantage, and followed up in pestering him too. Knowing he had no say in the matter, especially since Misa was involved, Kureha sighed.
'Misa, please come and save me.'
(MAJOR SPOILERS for Kureha's Neutral End, koyo, sena, hibiki mention, kureha x misa, koyo x misa, mainly both of them but, reverse harem, shenanigans, banter, comedy, Sena is a weirdo, friendship, bromance, 3.4k words)
"This is stalking."
"Oh, Koyo..." Shaking his head while clicking his tongue, Sena waves a finger in front of his best friend's face and speaks in a hushed whisper. "This is not stalking; this is observing! Look here—"
"This is totally stalking." Koyo shakes his head back at him and runs a hand through his hair, sighing. "How did you even know she was going to be here?"
Sometime during the afternoon, Koyo had come over to school during the weekend, thinking he could meet up with Kureha without the bustle usually accompanying school days. But instead, he found his best friend peeping through the windows of the classroom with his usual sparkly aura.
Upon further inspection, he realized that for some reason, Misa was here too, alongside what seemed like a few female classmates of hers.
"Shh! She'll hear you."
"..."
He realized this some time before, but Sena really did have some questionable habits. He just hopes that Seiya won't unexpectedly show up and drag him all the way down to hell as punishment for stalking.
But thinking about it, Seiya would be pretty unreliable himself in that regard.
"Answer my question." Koyo grabbed Sena in a headlock and continued on despite Sena's choked protests. "Please don't tell me you've been following her from morning till now?"
"Hack-! N-Not from morning!"
"Then since lunchtime?"
"Ugh..."
So that was a yes.
Misa probably hadn't noticed him yet, he concludes as he watches Misa chatter away with an innocent look on her face. Or else, she'd probably have called Sena out and sent him away.
"Quick, quick!" He hears the girls giggle. "Spin the bottle!"
It looks like they were playing a game, though as to why they were doing it in the school, Koyo had no idea. Finally, he removes his hold on Sena.
"Gasp—"
"Hey, I know for a fact that ghosts can't breathe, by the way." He takes a peek inside the classroom and sees the glass bottle spin between the girls. "C'mon, we shouldn't be spying on them like this. Let's go."
Before Sena could add in extra protests, Koyo sees a familiar figure walk down the hallway.
"Hm?" Kureha spots them and waves his hand in greeting. "I thought those voices were familiar, so it was you two."
"Hi."
"Kureha!" As if spotting his life savior, Sena waved at him with a smile.
Sighing, Kureha comes over to join them. "If the both of you were being this loud, Misa has probably already noticed the both of you. What are the both of you doing here anyways?"
Koyo jabs a finger at Sena. "He was stalking her."
But for some reason, Sena doesn't deny his accusations as he usually would. Instead, he asks, "Hey Kureha, you spend most of your time in this school, right? Do you have any idea why Misa is here at school on a weekend?"
"She said something about an outing with her friends?" Kureha scratches the back of his neck in thought. "They had already asked the teachers beforehand, and they allowed it under the pretext of a study gathering."
"Oh, so she told you..."
"It's not that weird," Koyo said, sighing as he patted Sena on the back. "You said it yourself, Kureha spends most of his time in this school, so it's a lot easier for her to tell him."
"Hm? What is it? Why is Sena acting like that?"
Jealousy, plain and simple. But knowing Sena would have wanted his pride intact, Koyo chose to stay silent.
"Oooh!" The three of them hear the girls exclaim, "The bottle landed on Misa!"
"Ah, er..."
It was Misa's turn apparently, but after having already noticed them some time ago, her eyes flickered to them in embarrassment, as if silently telling them, 'Please leave.' The girls pester Misa, asking her to pick truth or dare. She's hesitant as they do, despite having voluntarily placed herself in this situation.
"C'mon, Misa, if it's a dare, we won't ask you to do anything too weird," Sayaka says, trying her best to reassure her best friend. "Promise!"
"I don't trust you." Misa shook her head, not wanting to put her dignity in the hands of a bunch of girls starved for some fun. "Truth."
"We should get going. It's rude to eavesdrop." Kureha left first, his long cloak fluttering behind him.
"Agreed." Koyo tugged at Sena. "You heard him; c'mon."
"Urgh..." This time, Sena doesn't put up a fight, not wanting to disrespect Misa's wishes, and begrudgingly lets Koyo drag him out of her sight.
Kureha had already long left the hallway, but Koyo was still dragging a dejected Sena, so they could still hear the girls' conversation.
"Alright! Then..."
As Koyo heard the evil giggles of her friends, he couldn't help but feel a shiver crawl up his spine. Women were terrifying creatures when they wanted to be, and he inwardly prayed for Misa's pride.
"Okay, truth! Have you ever kissed anyone before?"
"Hack-!
Koyo had almost fallen over, as Sena had abruptly decided to dig his heels into the ground, the sudden force making him lose balance.
"Sena!" Koyo hissed at him. "This. Is. Not. The. Time."
"Aren't you curious?"
"No!" That was a lie. "And even if I was, it's rude to eavesdrop. I don't really care about the answer either."
That was a lie too.
Tugging him along, Koyo makes a dash for it while running away with Sena in tow, not wanting to hear Misa's answer, too afraid of what her answer may be.
'There shouldn't be a problem even if she had already kissed someone, right?' Koyo pondered, still dragging Sena by the collar up the stairs. 'In the end, it's not like it changes things the way they are now.'
"Uh..."
Hearing a familiar voice, Koyo spotted Hibiki in the mirror, who was watching him with widened eyes, gaze focused on the spot where Koyo had grabbed Sena. Having heard a few things about Hibiki beforehand, he quickly let go of Sena.
"It's not what you think."
"Oh! Don't worry, I understand the close relationship between the two of you." Hibiki smiled, but it seemed a bit strained. "If you were wondering where Kureha went, he just entered the library."
"...Thanks." Inwardly, Koyo let out a sigh of relief. He'd come here to see Kureha to begin with anyways, so he might as well let Sena tag along; better to keep him away from Misa while he can.
"Hi, Hibiki!" Ever the idol he was, Sena flashed a bright smile while waving to Hibiki, who he learned sometime ago was a fan. It seemed to cause some sort of reaction, as Hibiki jerked slightly on the spot and nodded his head shyly in greeting while blushing(?) furiously before disappearing into the mirror.
Honestly, it's been almost a year since he became a ghost, but Koyo can't seem to get used to the strange spirits he's met. Hibiki just so happened to be one of the scarier weirder ones.
"Well then." He looked at Sena with narrowed eyes. "Let's go meet up with Kureha."
"Yes...Mom."
"Don't call me that."
After walking up a flight of stairs and turning right, they finally made their way to the library and found Kureha standing there waiting for them.
"...Did the both of you stay back to—"
"No."
With a clear conscience, Koyo denied him. Kureha sighed with relief.
"Haah... I was worried that she might have gotten upset at us if we stayed around for too long. Looks like my worries were unfounded."
Koyo mentally patted his chest in satisfaction.
"Well? What were both of you doing here in the first place?"
"So here's the thing," Sena spoke. "I wanted to invite her over for another err... I mean I wanted to ask her for some help since I lost something recently, and came over to search for her."
"How did you know she was here?"
"Oh, that? I ran into that scary incubus on the way to her house and caught him grumbling and saying she wasn't at home, so I thought I'd try my luck at the school."
"So, in other words, you've been searching for her since this morning so that you could ask her out on a date without our knowledge, but since she wasn't at home, you came to the school and decided to eavesdrop on her instead."
"When you say it like that, I sound like a creep—"
"You are very much a creep."
"Anyways!" Kureha clapped his hands, sensing that the conversation had taken a strange turn. "If you want to speak with her, you'll have to wait. She said that her study date will last until evening at latest, from what she told me."
"She told you that too, huh..."
Kureha's eyes squinted in confusion. "Hey, I think you're looking a little paler than usual..."
"Ignore him, Kureha." While pushing aside his own jealousy, Koyo decided to get what he came here for. "I originally came over to invite you to a movie—"
"I refuse."
"It's not horror."
"I don't trust you."
Koyo couldn't help but burst out laughing as he tried to assuage Kureha's concerns.
"Look, if it's horror, you can just run out of the theater if you want to."
"That's a little rude to begin with—"
"Argh!!!" Wearing a look much like that of a kicked puppy, Sena yelled out in frustration. "Why am I the only one bothered about this and not the two of you?!"
Koyo sensed a foreboding feeling of dread, already having an idea as to what Sena was referring to. But before he could stop or warn Kureha, that innocent guy, Kureha asked, "What are you talking about?"
Dammit.
"About the 'truth' they asked Misa? The question about whether Misa has ever kissed anyone???"
"..."
"Look." Koyo sighed. "Even if she had kissed someone before, would that change how we feel about her?"
"Well, no..."
"Right?" He reached over to pat Sena on the back for the 2nd time of the day as if he were calming down a child. Damn, maybe he really was Sena's mom. "So calm down. Besides, Kureha wasn't there when the question was asked; of course he's not going to worry about it, though now he might..."
He could almost see Sena's sparkly aura dim, just a little. "That's true; sorry I brought it up, since it would have only just bothered Kureha needlessly to begin with..."
"..."
"..."
"..."
"Well then," Kureha's movements were janky as he tried to make his escape. "I'd better leave before you drag me off to watch another horror movie—"
"Don't you dare run away." Grabbing him by the cloak, Koyo holds onto Kureha with renewed conviction.
"That's right, tell us everything!" Eager to know more, Sena pressed the advantage and followed up by pestering him too. Knowing he had no say in the matter, especially since Misa was involved, Kureha sighed.
'A long time ago, I wished to become an actor,' Kureha lamented on the inside. If he couldn't even keep his own feelings under wraps, maybe he was never destined for a role like that to begin with.
'Misa, please come and save me.'
After an hour of coaxing, Kureha began to—reluctantly—tell them about their time during Misa's spiriting away. He left out the more personal details, but it was still hard to tell them about the day Misa kissed him. No matter how straightforward he was, this was his limit, and as strange as it was enough that ghosts could blush, Kureha's cheeks were red almost throughout the entire explanation.
"To be honest...," Kureha said slowly, "I can't really remember much of it."
Sena gasped, horrified. "T-That's...blasphemous! If she kissed me, I'd enshrine the entire moment in my head and replay it for time and time to come—"
Koyo gave Sena a whack on the head.
"Ow!"
He should make it a point to keep Seiya away from Sena, because his best friend has started to act way too much like that perverted Grand Warden.
"Go ahead, Kureha."
It was clear in the gloomy tone in Koyo's voice that he was rather...shaken by this new revelation. Nevertheless, he sought to keep his cool while reigning in Sena for the duration of the explanation.
"Right." Kureha shot him a worried look but continued. "At that time, I had almost lost my sanity, and was on the verge of becoming a wraith."
"The entire situation must have been extremely dangerous in that case, no? I've never met a wraith before, but Koyo told me about them."
He had no heartbeat, so in place of a beating heart, Koyo felt unshakeable chills run down the entire course of his body as fear gripped him at the mere thought of the danger the two of them were in.
"Are you sure..." Koyo swallowed. "Are you sure the both of you are okay?"
Kureha smiled bitterly.
"If Misa hadn't done what she did, neither of us would have made it out of that situation as we did."
Kureha cast his gaze down, his regret evident as guilt shadowed across his face. "Now that I think about it again," Kureha chuckled self-deprecatingly, "I do owe a lot to Misa."
Koyo groaned, and covered his eyes with his arm.
"So? What happened after that?"
"Well, while my mind was on the verge of losing it, Misa thought she could ease the burden of my painful memories by having me share them with her. And so, she kissed me."
"How does that work?!" Sena interjected loudly, all the while wearing a scandalous look, and a curious twinkle in his eyes.
'This guy is enjoying himself way too much,' Koyo thought.
"Apparently, if the dead made physical contact with a member of the living, their regrets and dark thoughts can be shared alongside them." Kureha held up his sheath and laid it across his lap. "This was something that the both of us found out during her spiriting away. In that case, she decided to take advantage of that knowledge to help me."
"Okay, while that's new information, and I can understand the reason, but why would she kiss you to do it?!?!"
"Well, there's only one reason, right?" Koyo pointed it out. "You heard what he told us the other day when we gatecrashed your stargazing date—"
"Oh, so you know you were being gatecrashers, huh? You spare no thought for me!"
"Quit being dramatic. Anyways..."
Koyo remembers the day he first met Misa. At that time, he'd been worried for Kureha, who had abruptly disappeared off the face of the earth alongside all the other ghosts that usually roamed in the school. He'd made it a point to visit every day in hopes of finding Kureha, and after 9 days, Kureha had finally come back.
And from then on, he watched as Kureha began to look after a peculiar young woman, that woman namely being Misa.
He was only intrigued at first, yes, but then things took a strange turn when, all of a sudden, Misa began to notice ghosts. He met her in the school hallway, and first thought, 'What a strange girl.'
Maybe there was a reason why she wanted to see ghosts again, that reason probably being;
"She was in love with Kureha at that time, right?" Koyo rested his cheek on his palm, trying to play it off nonchalantly while hiding away the painful burn in his chest. "So of course, she wanted to do whatever she could for him."
"..."
"...That's what happened, yes." Kureha nodded slowly, wary of their reactions.
"Aw, man..." Sena moaned in dejection. "So not only did I already lose in the race of love, Kureha even beat me to Misa's first kiss."
"Ew, don't say it like that."
"What, am I wrong?"
As if aware of Kureha's feelings, the both of them tried their best to revert the atmosphere back to its usual lighthearted mood. At that, he gave a slight smile.
"Whatever the case is!" Sena got up to his feet with self-sparked vigor and shouted, "Even if she used to be in love with Kureha before, I'll definitely win over her heart sooner or later!"
Kureha's face crumpled at Sena's words. "When you say 'used to be in love', it makes me feel a little hurt."
"And also, why're you so confident you'd win her over eventually? You think too highly of yourself." Koyo throws him a disgusted look. "I thought about it recently, but you're really starting to act too much like Seiya."
"But that's not necessarily a bad thing, is it?" Sena tilted his head. "He's a handsome fellow, nay?"
"He's a degenerate pervert."
"Are you saying I'm a pervert too???"
"...Also, is it just me," Kureha shifted uncomfortably while shivering as he called out to them, "or has it become a little colder in here than before?"
Out of nowhere, they all heard a composed and young female voice answering, "That's probably Hibiki."
"Gah!" Surprised by the sudden guest, Sena jumped in his seat, as he spotted Yui standing only a few feet away from them without their notice. They must have been too engrossed within their conversation and, as a result, failed to notice her presence.
"Oh, hi Yui. And what do you mean by Hibiki?"
Koyo watched as a young girl with a black ponytail walked up to them with a calm expression on her face. "Hm? Haven't you noticed? There's a mirror just outside of this door."
Unlike the rumor of "The girl in the nurse's office", Yui was a soft-spoken and good-natured spirit. She also wasn't the type to play around with jokes, so that means...
Kureha stood up slowly while throwing an apprehensive look towards the direction of where the mirror was assumed to be. "We should leave before Hibiki's aura grows darker; he must have overheard our conversation."
If ghosts could sweat, then Koyo would surely have felt a bead of sweat drip down his neck, as the scariest ghost of this school directed that 'black-thing' —as Kureha liked to call it—at them.
As they all got up, they noticed the sound of the library door sliding open, and saw Misa standing there at the entrance. Looking at the abnormal amount of spirits gathered in one place, she gave them a funny smile.
"What are all of you doing here?"
As if to add to the humor, the dangerous aura they felt before had abruptly disappeared.
"Misa!" Sena was quick to react, and ran up to her to greet her, followed by Yui. Before Kureha could go up to her too, Koyo grabbed him by the shoulder.
"What is it now?" Kureha asked him with a whisper.
"Kureha, just because her first kiss might've been with you, just because the person she loved first was you—and maybe is still you," Koyo stared straight ahead towards Misa, "doesn't mean I'm going to give up."
Kureha smiled in relief. "Is that so?"
"Hey, why do you look so relieved? Shouldn't you be more upset by this?"
"A little? But it only means you care about her that much, right?"
Koyo hated to admit it, but Kureha was spot on.
"Also." Kureha shrugged off Koyo's hold, and gestured at him to get a move on as he looked back towards him. "I wouldn't want this to ruin our friendship."
"...Hahaha."
In all honesty, when Kureha described how his and Misa's first kiss came to be, what he felt first was not jealousy, no. He was worried.
Koyo knew what wraiths were like, had seen them before a few times. He also knew how violent they could get, and how dangerous they could truly be. So when he heard that both Kureha and Misa were in danger of one, especially since the wraith in question was Kureha, he was scared.
And he's glad that the both of them are okay, sincerely. That meant so much more to him than his own feelings.
'Not that I'll ever say it out loud.'
But maybe he didn't have to. After all, Kureha knew just how kind of a person Koyo really was.
"Koyo?"
Noticing him standing there lost in thought, Misa called out to him, and Koyo felt his heart move for her.
'I guess it should be okay, since I like her this much.'
His feelings for her will not waver.
'Besides,' Koyo thought slyly, 'there are chances that her next kiss will probably be with someone who's actually alive.'
That, he could hope for.

this can't be happening
Koharu and Yukimaro share a short conversation(?) before the appearance of an unexpected but familiar face renders them both speechless at the sight of them.
Safe to say, everybody's dealing with some pretty interesting new revelations today.
In all honesty, it's just Koharu.
(9RIP, MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SECRET ROUTE AND HIS APPEARANCE, seriously do not read this if you haven't finished it, secret li x Misa, fluff, comedy, Koharu pov in the first half, shenanigans, Ayakashi shenanigans bcuz I love them, 2.1k+ words)
"...Hey, Koharu. If you're going to be such a worrywart, why don't you just go back and check up on them?"
"S-shut up!"
For 15 minutes straight, Koharu had anxiously paced around in circles while holding his hands behind in back in feverish stress, just like a grandpa. It's been a some time since they'd left Touka and Misa with the God of Death, and each minute that passes only seems to add gray hairs to Koharu's hair–that is–if Ayakashi could grow grey hair in the first place anyways.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk. With all this pitter-pattering of yours, why leave them in the first place?"
"That was an affair between them, it's not like I could just- hey what are you doing?!"
Without Koharu's notice, Yukimaro had climbed over the fence belonging to Misa's house, and was walking on the top of it as if it were a circus tight rope.
Having gone back without them, Koharu had to drag Yukimaro away from the convenience store so that they could wait for Misa and Touka at her house but...
"Oi! Get down from there, this isn't a playground!"
As always, Yukimaro is playing a fool.
"I am not playing, Koharu! I am merely trying to keep an eye out for them when they get back!"
"YOU'RE FACING THE WRONG WAY!"
Despite the ruckus, no one hears the loud bunch of Ayakashi hanging around the front lawn yelling at each other as if it were some normal day at a children's school. At least that's what they thought.
"Hm? Is something over there?"
The both of them promptly freeze as they hear Tsubasa peek out through the front doorway staring straight at them.
'Crap, did she notice us somehow?'
"Hey, Yukimaro! Come down right-"
Before he could finish his own sentence, Koharu slaps a hand over his mouth and quickly swerves to the side as Tsubasa comes up walking to them while reaching her hand out and...
"Was it just my imagination?"
Pressing her fingers against the panel, the lamp on the gate switches off with a quick flicker.
"Haaaaah, this thing's been turning on and off as it pleases, can't even get a good night's sleep..."
Yawning, Tsubasa leaves the two Ayakashi alone and goes back into the house without so much as another word.
"...I wonder if Master will come back soon."
"Oh so now you're worried?"
"Well, duh! I'm hungry!"
"...Forget it, tch."
As of the moment, the only thing Yukimaro is worried about right now is food. Not that Yukimaro didn't care about Touka or Misa, it was probably just because he had a lot more confidence in them then Koharu did.
Sometimes, he wishes for that same frustratingly optimistic confidence of his.
Still, it's been a long while. With Tsubasa up and about, the chances that Misa gets caught for sneaking out in the middle of the night are much higher. The possible earful she might get from her mother is enough to frighten even Koharu.
Just as Koharu was about to storm off to go looking for them, they heard;
"Still hanging around, I see."
"!"
An unfamiliar voice greets them with disdain, and the sight before them renders Koharu speechless.
"Ohohohooo? The both of you are finally back! Hey master, did you get the snacks I asked for?"
"Yes but-"
"Here you go."
Aiming for Yukimaro's chest, Touka tosses a bag full of onigiri and Konpeito candy at him, catching him off guard and making him stumble backwards.
"Hagh! Touka-dono, I understand that strength of a figure the size of yours is difficult to control but can you not aim for my heart while you're tossing things at me?"
"Eheh, I don't know what you mean."
"Touka..."
Misa shakes her head exasperatedly, but she doesn't loosen her hold on the hand belonging to the man that now stands beside her.
"....There's no way."
Rubbing his eyes viciously, Koharu speculates that the imposter infront of him is nothing but a mere illusion. However, after once, and after five times still, no matter how matter times he pushes his palms up against his eyelids, the illusion doesn't go away.
A man in the image of Touka now stands before him in a form more regal than he had ever seen before.
"How rude, is the appearance of my most natural form that much of an oddity to you, Koharu?"
"!"
It's not a hallucination.
"Hahaha! Rather than awed, he seems rather shocked. Such an appearance probably does not fit his image of the young boy you looked once before!"
"And you are as much of a brute as ever despite the change. I wouldn't have expected any less from you, Yukimaro."
"What can else can I say that I have not told you prior? You know very well how unafraid I am of gods."
"Can the both of you not fight in front of my house, you're scaring the cat."
Pointing to a stray cat standing on all fours with its fur standing on end, Misa reprimands the two of them as if it were just another normal day between all of them.
"...This all feels so wrong."
Koharu tries to envision the man infront of him sitting on the couch while watching Tonodomaru as intently as he always did, and comes up blank.
"But it's real."
Amused by his reaction, Touka smiles at him. That same mysterious smile he wore whenever his aura as a god permeated the air. Only this time–along with his physical stature–that divine aura of his has only seemed to have gotten even stronger.
If not overbearingly heavy.
For the first time, Koharu sees Touka's true nature as a spirit with access to the high heavens.
It's not as if Koharu had never been afraid of him; he has. On occasions that golden gaze would coldly penetrate whatever he had set his eyes on, and recalls the feeling of cold ice prickling down his back when he was faced with Touka's unconcealed nature as a tengu for the very first time, on the day both Yukimaro and him came to Misa's rescue on that one day.
"Are you aware of the term...of being spirited away?"
He always found the disconnect between that... inexplicable fear he associated with Touka, and the young childish-looking tengu who watches Todonamaru in his free time to be extremely jarring.
Looking back, maybe it was something to be grateful about.
"Ah, my apologies Misa."
Quickly reverting back to his old personality, Touka switches back from the heavy aura he exuded to a sweet one.
"Rather than wasting our time like, how about we go back in together?"
"Hey, you callin' us annoying or something?"
Still, Koharu has no intention of treating Touka any differently.
"As if I hadn't made that obvious already. But the main reason would be because..."
"T-Touka!?"
Misa stammers in surprise as Touka pulls her closer to him.
"I'm going to spend the night with her!"
"Huh?! No fai-"
"HAH?!?!?!?!"
Bursting out in indignation, it takes a few extra seconds for Koharu to recall the words Misa said earlier.
"It's because Touka's love for me is boundless!"
...Okay, maybe he should've put the pieces together but still?!?!
"Oh, did I not say it out loud properly?"
"We heard you the first time!!!"
This time, both him and Misa shout in unison.
Minus his extremely suggestive wording, the revelation of Touka's feelings for Misa has left Koharu's mind in a frenzy. As if one intense revelation wasn't enough with him, fate had decided to deck him from the left with another.
"Well, I made my point clear didn't I? Come on, Misa."
Touka unwraps his arms around her waist, and instead opts to take her hand and pull her face closer to his.
"This will be the last time you get to see me in this form so..."
As if ignoring the world around them, he gives her an affectionate smile.
"I do hope you will allow me to stay by your side tonight."
"...When did you find out?"
Crouching down by the garden walls with his head in his hands, Koharu questions Yukimaro who had his mouth stuffed with teriyaki onigiri.
"Mmrhmmmmm!"
"Don't talk with your mouth full!"
Swallowing his food down his throat and puffing up his chest proudly, Yukimaro boasts, "Ohohoho! With my incredible ability to read people's auras, I-"
"Okay, got it, no need to say more."
"Ughhh, at least let me give you the run down!"
"Don't need it."
He's had enough for today, even now he's still trying to process everything in one go.
Though regardless of Koharu's volition, Yukimaro plans on telling him everything, even if he doesn't want to hear it.
"I'm quite surprised you hadn't figured it out, Koharu. Touka-dono wasn't exactly all that discreet about it."
"I never thought those feelings were romantic, okay?!"
Sure, Touka often favoured Misa heavily as a tengu and cared for her a great deal, but he never thought it'd be like that! At all! Besides, is it okay for a god to fall in love with a human just like that?
Will everything work out fine between them?
"Still, it's a good thing all of this was resolved in time before the spell wore off."
"You mean the same one that the priest cast?"
"Mhmm! It was thanks to that she could see Touka in the first place and without it, she wouldn't have been able to talk with him at all! Unlike you or me, Touka doesn't have a real reason to keep in contact with her in the Mortal Realm."
"So you say, but now that I've finished my haunting, I'll have to get going soon."
As he says that, Koharu feels a pang of loneliness in his chest.
He tries to ignore it, the way that he hates goodbyes, the way this pain is at fault to no one else but his own.
"Oooo, that's right! Then don't you want to say goodbye to Misa tomorrow?"
"...Don't need to."
"Awwww, don't be shy! All of us know just how much you'll miss-"
"AGH! THAT'S ENOUGH!"
After endlessly pestering Koharu throughout the rest of the night, Yukimaro had finally managed to convince him to say his goodbyes the next time they saw Misa.
'This is goodbye to the mysterious times we've shared between us.'
But for Touka and Misa, it is only the beginning.
"Want a Konpeito candy?"
"...sure."
Koharu doesn't have it in him to fight anymore, and silently accepts the candy.
'Maybe I'll leave some for her before I leave.'
"Are you all tucked in?"
Smiling, Touka looms over Misa, an arm propping his figure up as he drapes a blanket over her.
"Uh, yes but..."
Fidgeting, Misa tries to distract herself by clutching the hems of the blanket as tightly as she can.
"Are you going to watch over me tonight too?"
"Of course."
He tilts his head in innocent confusion at her question.
"Just like always."
"..."
Misa wants to say something, and tries her best to find the right words until Touka finally catches on.
Laughing softly, he asks;
"Aha, are you bothered by it because you're more conscious of me as a man now?"
Having her true feelings being outed, Misa unconsciously clenches her fists harder on the sheets.
"I've always been conscious of you! Well, maybe not always..."
Misa tries to deny it, but Touka isn't bothered by it at all. If anything, the sight of her squirming around in embarrassment in an attempt to save face endears him.
It makes him adore her even more.
'How refreshing.'
It's not as if Misa had never taken his feelings seriously before. He still remembers the way her eyes widened in shock when he told her his feelings for the first time.
'I probably shouldn't tease her anymore than this, but it's so tempting!'
He must maintain his dignity, at least for this moment.
"It's best we be quiet now, I'm sure Tsubasa is still walking around the house half-asleep."
Brushing her bangs away, Touka presses his palm against Misa's forehead and gently slides it down lower to cover her eyes.
"You must be tired from today, please sleep well tonight for the last time."
'Before I leave and that demon takes over your dreams.'
It leaves him unsettled and aggravated–to pawn off Misa's peace of mind during her dreams to the foul thing–but this is a challenge he meant for Misa to overcome on her own from the very start.
And overcome it she will, he believes this truly.
"Touka..."
Grasping his hand, Misa holds on tight to him, wanting to stay closer to him in what she believes could be their last moments where they're allowed together.
She clearly wants to ask him something, from before and even now but...
'I want to keep it a surprise.'
"Hey, Misa. Do you want to hold hands as you sleep?"
"..."
Weighing between wanting to ask him more and accepting his offer, she;
"Yes, I would like that."
She decides to treasure the moment they have now instead.
"Hehe..."
He watches her as she dozes off, eyes blinking blearily at him in an attempt to keep her gaze on him, and refusing to fall asleep.
She truly believes this will be the last time she sees him.
"It won't be long now. Because soon..."
Much like the night he talked to Misa for the first time–the night before he spirited her away–he whispers to her;
"I'll be with you."
