Cori Bush, one of the leaders of protests against the police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, has beaten longtime representative William Lacy Clay in Missouri’s Democratic primary.

The recent protests over the death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis, outrage over racial injustice and the continued coronavirus threat to communities of colour, are believed to have contributed to her victory.

Bush is now virtually guaranteed a seat in Congress representing the heavily Democratic St Louis area. She would be joining other progressive Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley who support Medicare for all, the Green New Deal and other economic and racial justice policies.

Bush was congratulated by Bernie Sanders online, who described her as a “true progressive”.
