I'm thinking about that genre of post which goes: this would kill a medeival peasant! which annoys me, as a medievalist, because I think the average medeival person would be one of the easiest people from history to explain things to. (Also, the middle ages were very long, also, where are you sourcing this peasant? From which country or state?) But I digress; I'm trying to work out a list of categories which would kill an average person from a certain historical era. I believe that, while the average person from 18th century Britain would think the more outrageous kink play par for the course, the average middle-class, protestant Victorian would suffer a paroxsysm of moral shock on being exposed to the same material. Or perhaps not, a friend of mine doing a PhD in Victorian literature recently told me that caning and impact play was, by far, the most popular kink of the age due to the frequency with which corporal punishment was delivered in schools. It shaped the psyche of a nation. The British of the 17th century would be the easiest to kill in my opintion, merely by informing them that the sect of Christianity they invented last week is now defunct save for 15 members in Iowa, all of whom hold a different opinion on the original doctrine
