Happy 60th birthday, Ken!!!
I need!! 😍
5.20.21
Ken is 60!
My American friend (whom I refer to as my “personal shopper” because she trawls through shelves in stores to find me things and mails them over) sent me this guy to repaint for her to use in her photostories on Instagram.
She only wanted his face done but I took some creative liberties on his hair because he’s going to be paired with one of the dolls I’d previously repainted for her so his hair game needed to be improved. Mission successful, feel free to steal that idea 😂
The Jamal/Steven with rooted hair I thrifted last year had sadly been given a haircut (kids why?? His hair was so short already! Oh well, let's be fair - we've all done it). Last week, to my enormous surprise, I found ANOTHER Jamal at the same thrift store, and with much better hair. I don't usually buy duplicates (unless it's Diva mold Midge), but I thought it would be worth getting an upgrade here. When I got home and took a closer look, I discovered Jamal #2 had some hair chopped off too the left side of the head. Typical. But it's a smaller area, and the hair is in better shape overall, so I still think I might switch original Jamal for this guy. You don't see a lot of black fashion dolls around here, so I feel like hoarding both would be unfair. (Yeah, Hip Hoodie Fashionista guy exists, but those are aaaargh expensive.)
i think an interesting thing about SS ken's features is that if dyed, he could probably pass for a black doll better than most white kens.
I never thought about that. KattisDolls didn’t have any pics, but I found out the SS Ken mold is pretty close to the 1983 AA Ken mold, so I guess it could be possible. Wonder if any AA Ken was ever made with that mold? Maybe one of our Mattel experts knows?
(Also apparently the mold of the Ken with The Most Hair™ is actually Crystal Ken, but afaik the only difference is the hair.)
EDIT: kattisdolls didn’t have any pics of an AA Ken using the Superstar mold, I meant to say.
