Despite my numerous anti-k/@ posts, I do like Aang, I just don’t think he’s good with Katara.

I think his dynamic with Toph could’ve leaned into why she was pictured at the swamp, I think their earth and air dynamic could’ve been interesting to delve into, how he’s her freedom and she keeps him grounded.

I think Azula and Aang could also be interesting in the context of an Azula redemption arc. I think if Bryke/the comics hadn’t sabotaged what they had going on, I genuinely belief it could’ve been a new way for both characters to grow.

I also think Aang and On Ji is neat, I thought they were very cute together during the Headband! It’d be funny if he continued the trend of Avatars marrying Fire nation girls.

I think all of these characters bring out some of Aang’s greatest qualities, like his kindness, his charm, and his overall desire to help.

Zutara just wasn't really set up in the show at all. In Book 1 all their few scenes are extremely antagonistic. They amount to Zuko terrorizing Katara and Katara wanting to leave Zuko to freeze to death. The only kind of tension is colonial violence, unless you consider the implicit threat of sexual violence in "The Waterbending Scroll" romantic.

In Book 2 Katara and Zuko just don't really interact until the very end. And sure, they get the spirit water scene, but Katara also has fairly similar scenes, revolving around her mother's death making her feel empathy for a boy, with Aang, Haru, and Jet.

This leaves just The Southern Raiders and the series finale, and to be honest, going on a revenge mission to murder while being consumed with tough, negative emotions is not a very romantic occasion. That just leaves the series finale, which ends with Kataang.

And in all of the show, there are zero scenes implying Katara or Zuko are attracted to each other.

Let's look at ships which have or had more setup.

Maiko-we get two scenes showing Mai crushing on Zuko before they get together (plus a whole semi-canon comic showing them dating!).

Kataang. Not only do we get numerous scenes of Aang crushing on Katara, we also get at least three scenes of Katara showing interest in Aang before they get together. Not to mention the whole Oma and Shu story was included to tease Kataang.

Sokka/Ty Lee. We have several scenes of her thirsting after him, and it's pretty clear he'd be interested in it if it weren't for Suki.

Aang/On Ji. They actually danced together!

Tyzula. We have a whole scene of them faking hitting on each other.

Zutara lacks all of that.

I'm fine with the ship, but it wasn't really set up in canon, any more than, say, Aang/Zuko or Jet/Zuko were.

What are your other ATLA ships?

Zutara is my ATLA OTP, of course. As for other ships, I'm pretty flexible, depending on the story. I love Tokka, but Taang is also really cute and I can see it work. Sukka is wonderful, and Yuekka has a special kind of bittersweetness that I love. Jet also has a major crush on both Katara and Zuko in my mind, but idk if that counts as a ship (it'll definitely be fun to write in the Lee and Kya AU, tho).

I guess I just look for good characterization and storytelling. If the fic or idea is good, then I'll ship almost anything, unless I can't wrap my head around it because, let's face it, that happens.

On the rare ship spectrum, I've come to appreciate Jet/Suki, and decided to include it in one of my AUs. Aang/On Ji is one of my fav ships, too. They're so wholesome.

i love that she doesn’t fan girl over him and i find their potential to be just super sweet ( also i believe that on ji like ty lee related/descendants of air nomads

no reason i like sword boyfriends and i think jet would have been a good partner when it came to giving reparations back to the earth kingdom

no notes best canon ship and varrick is related to them.
