Heroism, Freedom and Mythic Imagination in the African Diaspora Community Lecture Thursday, August 14, 2014 • 12:00 p.m. As an official partner with the Onyxcon Institute, the Auburn Avenue Research Library (AARL) in collaboration with the Southwest Library will host Heroism, Freedom and Mythic Imagination in the African Diaspora. This community lecture will examine the historical role of black creative activity as socio-political resistance to racism and a powerful tool for cultural self-representation throughout the African Diaspora. Thomas Thursday, August 14, 2014 • 6:00 p.m. As an official partner with the Onyxcon Institute, the Auburn Avenue Research Library (AARL) in collaboration with the Hammonds House Museum, will host the Onyxcon Institute Writers Workshop featuring Sheree R. Thomas. Author and publisher Sheree R. Thomas will discuss how aspiring authors can refine their writing skills and develop the required expertise to succeed in today’s literary marketplace. The Intolerable Burden The story of the Carter family's brave decision to claim their Civil Rights Film Screening Saturday, August 23, 2014 • 3:00 p.m. The Auburn Avenue Research Library (AARL), in collaboration with the Hammonds House Museum, will host a screening of the documentary, The Intolerable Burden. This compelling film examines the undaunted courage of sharecroppers Mae Bertha and Matthew Carter who in the autumn of 1965, enrolled the youngest eight of their thirteen children in the all-white public schools of Drew, Mississippi. This event will take place at the Hammonds House Museum, located at 503 Peeples Street, Atlanta, GA 30310. Sound Garden: An Evening with DJ Ausar Saturday, August 23, 2014 • 7:00 p.m. In recognition of Black August, and in collaboration with the Friends of Auburn Avenue Research Library, the Hammonds House Museum and Auburn Avenue Research Library present Sound Garden: An Evening with DJ Ausar. This extraordinary celebration of eclectic Africana music will be facilitated by master musicologist, DJ Ausar, host of WRFG’s Kalakuta Show, and feature Afro-beat, Funk, Jazz, Rare Grooves, House and Broken beats from across the Black Diaspora. This event will take place at the Hammonds House Museum 503 Peeples Street, Atlanta, Georgia, 30310.
