Spoilers for 'Force of Nature' book and movie by Jane Harper

So... I made the decision to watch the movie adaptation of 'Force of Nature', the second book in the Aaron Falk series that I just finished and oh boy.....

Sometimes I do wonder why they decided to make a movie of a book and then change so much?

Some examples (yes, i took notes);

Bree and Beth get along too well in this movie

Daniel is Jill's husband in the movie, not her brother

Bree and Beth did share a tent together

it was a snake bite, not a spider

Detective King and Aaron get along in the book.

There was no big confrontation bewteen Daniel and Aaron

Jill's character is far more aggressive and confident in the movie

And Alice's character is then not aggressive and bitchy enough in this movie.

Alice and Daniel did not have an affair, nor did Jill think that

those are all minor I think but then you have the bigger ones, such as

Falk's mom died at childbirth, not in the wood

Aaron does not know the way to the cabin in the books, a prisoner tells them for a lesser jailtime.

Aaron does not find her body

aaron finds the location where Alice might be because of a signal on his phone

Carmen is with him when they find that signal in the book

Beth gives them the documents they need 2 weeks after finding Alice, back in the city.

the 'sexy pics' plot is changed to the 'money stealing plot'

"it was worth it", Carmen is a bit of a bitch in this movie. And she also doesn't have a lot to do in this one. She is totally not present during the main parts like she is in the book.

Aaron's hand is not burned, at least not as I can see and it is also not mentioned that he has problems with it, like in the book.

the actor playing Aaron sort of feels wrong for it.

Again, I don't understand why you would buy the rights from a book and then make a movie that is so different?! Like, I guess it's not bad or I don't hate it but, just having read the book..... Yeah...

Also: Force of Nature: The Dry 2 is a stupid name because there was not a single dry spot in that whole area. 😖

And changing Aaron Falk's back story and therefore the relationship with his father is just a crime.

I have not seen the movie of the first book, judging from reviews it's a lot better then movie 2 so I should give that a try.

It was nice seeing Tess from The Last of Us in this movie.

The Dry Movie Review

Aaron Falk returns to his drought-stricken hometown to attend a tragic funeral. But his return opens a decades-old wound - the unsolved death of a teenage girl.

I know that the critical consensus was positive for The Dry, but I can’t say that I felt similarly. I had not yet read the book, but planned to change this after watching the film so I could compare the two, so this review is based on the film alone.

The Dry is visually appealing, and the cast is of course phenomenal. What I love most about films such as this one is that they are often a great vehicle for strong character work, and this is no exception. The depth that this film allows, furthered by the strong flashback scenes, is remarkable for character development. The most engaging aspects of The Dry are the relationships between all of the characters, particularly due to the tension exuded by Falk’s return to his hometown and what happened when he was a teenager. There is nothing more compelling than the back and forth that occurs between conflicting personalities with various suspect agendas. The actors portray their onscreen personas brilliantly. I also enjoyed the burgeoning friendship between Aaron (Eric Bana) and Sergeant Raco (Keir O’Donnell) as they attempted to discover the truth of the supposed murder-suicide.

Unfortunately, whilst I very much enjoyed the character work, I couldn’t help but be become more disappointed with the narrative the further the story progressed. This was particularly evident towards the end of the film, however I also felt that many of the supposed clues and plot twists were completely obvious early on. I have no idea if this is due to the shift from book to film, or common to both, but I could tell where most of the story was going almost immediately. This would not have been terrible on its own, but the fact of the matter is the end became a major letdown when revelations occurred that I just felt weren’t at all believable, and the person I was watching it with was also verbalising this as we watched it. The exception to this is the companion narrative set in the past, which I think was handled beautifully.

Did I enjoy my viewing? Yes, of course, there was a lot I liked about The Dry, but the essential elements of the crime/thriller narrative that were ‘revealed’ by its end just didn’t do it for me at all. Much of it felt out of place and didn’t make sense when compared to other aspects of the plot itself. We found ourselves looking back at things that had occurred earlier in the film and trying to understand how any of it made sense to end in that way.

Book 39 of 2025.

This is a reread for me but it could actually be the first time I'm reading this book again because I don't remember Anything from it! And that is not because the book is bad, it's just because in recent years I have read too many books, too fast and they all turn into a blur.

(That is why I am trying to slow down my reading for this year, and I think it's going rather well?)

Aaron Falk is a wonderful character. I like how calm and thoughtful he is, I think he only blows up once in this whole story and that is impressive considering how almost everyone in that town hates him.

The case was also interesting and how they go about and try to figure out all the pieces, it starts really small, with the bullets being Remington's instead of the usual Winchester ones the family uses and it goes from there.

Super fun book to read, very easy style of writing, the chapters aren't too long and you just want to keep reading.
