A Birthday Anniversary Typography Tuesday
Today, June 19th, is the birthday anniversary of W.A. Dwiggins. He was born in 1880 in Ohio. This year it is serendipitous that his birth date falls on Typography Tuesday. We are featuring the 1931 edition of The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. It was published by Random House in New York and is one of a limited edition of 1200 copies printed at the Abbey Press, Gordon-Taylor Inc., in Cambridge, MA. The book is designed by Dwiggins and features his illustrations, lettering, and ornaments in his geometric style.
Graphic design, a phrase apparently coined by Dwiggins, is an umbrella description of Dwiggins’s many pursuits, including advertising, book design, illustration, typography, typeface design, and calligraphy. The design historian and writer Paul Shaw (@PaulShawLetters ) has done extensive research on Dwiggins for his Definitive Dwiggins series on his Blue Pencil blog, including discussing Dwiggins’s interest in designing for H.G. Wells.
