Aruba is one of the four constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (along with Curaçao, Sint Maarten, and, of course, the Netherlands), although its current status aparte was only supposed to have been temporary as it moved toward total independence [82% of its citizens voted for full independence in a referendum in 1977; as a part of that process, Aruba seceded from the Netherlands Antilles in 1986, becoming a constituent country of the Kingdom; but the plan for full independence was postponed in 1990--evidently indefinitely, for so it still stands].
