Was your understanding of government gleaned from text books, conversations with your parents or the media? Or perhaps a combination of all three?
Hunter Votes field reporter Beth McMullen has been talking to some of our future voters and leaders to find out what they have to say about the current political landscape.
You can listen to their unique insight here.
Different Votes: Week One Wrap All through the election we hear a lot from candidates telling us why we should vote for them.
But what about the people directly affected by the policies? What do they have to say about the pollies making decisions on their behalf?
"Different Votes" is a chance to meet the people in the community who don't always have the loudest voice when it comes to politics.
1233's Hunter Votes Field Reporter Beth McMullen has been speaking to people around the region who identify as belonging to these different "minority groups". You can listen back to all of those conversations here:
LGBITQ and Marriage Equality - Luke Griffiths
Community Disability Alliance Hunter - Linda Hughes and Catherine Mahony
The Homeless Community
Mental Health Consumers and Carers - Joanne Sinclair (ARAFMI) and Chris Mason
Migrants and Refugees - Gongbay Sarpor from Liberia and Stephen Mawa from South Sudan
This week on 1233 mornings we're focussing on the seat of Hunter.
So that's if you're living and voting in Cessnock, Maitland, Kurri Kurri, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Murrurundi, and Merriwa... with countless other towns in between.
The seat is classified as very safe Labor, having been held by the party since 1910 - the Fitzgibbon family since 1984. But can Michael Johnsen take the seat?
Nationals candidate Michael Johnson gained a swing of +3.2 in the last election, and 37.5% of the vote compared to Fitzgibbon's 62.5% He outlined his three key priorities to Jill Emberson this morning.
He wants local job losses in the aluminium industry to see as much attention as the car industry in Victoria, decentralisation of government deparments and repealing of the carbon tax
"...The mainstream media, in particular the press gallery, are realising that they have to cover issues & ask questions that the people are interested in, not just what they are interested in." Independent Journalist Margo Kingston joined 1233's Paul Bevan this afternoon to talk about Federal Politics and the rising importance of Citizen Journalism. Margo writes for Citizen Journalism project No Fibs - nofibs.com.au
