You stormed out there and you’re acting like an idiot, but it’s nice to know that sometimes you’ll fight for me, and all I have to do is laugh at some other guy’s story. But no one makes me laugh like you do.
i’m starting a mortuary abc series - first up is A!
Alkaline hydrolysis is a process similar to cremation, in which water, alkaline chemicals, heat and pressure accelerate natural decomposition. This process, just like cremation, leaves nothing but bone fragments. The other byproduct of this process is called “effluent”, which is a neutral liquid made of organic materials. Tjis liquid is sterile and contains salts, sugars, amino acids and peptides. There is no tissue or DNA left once this process is complete. The effluent is released with all other wastewater. This process results in approx. 32% more cremated remains than flame-based cremation, and may require a bigger urn.
Alkaline hydrolysis, also referred to as AH, chelimal cremation, bio cremation, watermation, and liquid cremation, is generally considered a gentler process, which is more environmentally friendly. AH uses far less fuel and has an overall lower carbon footprint than traditional cremation AND burial.
Alkaline hydrolysis was developed and patented in 1888 by Amos Herbert Hanson, who was a farmer looking for ways to make fertilizer from animal carcasses. The first commercial AH system was installed in 1993 at the Albany Medical College, and was used to dispose of human cadavers. The first use of the process within the funeral industry was in 2011 by two funeral homes; one in Florida and one in Ohio. There are many states where AH is legal, but it is still under consideration by many legal systems.
