“I missed you!”
Hey all! Hope everyone is keeping safe and healthy. Been out of the loop for a while, but finally getting back to GH under the wildest circumstances possible. My job is “essential” so I’m still working full time, but my sister is not, and she is bored out of her mind.
As a result, something I never dared dream has come to pass: my sister has started watching General Hospital, AND it was her idea. But she said she would only watch it if we made a project out of it...so we are starting a GH podcast!
Me (about 10 years in the GH fandom) + my sister (never seen an episode in her life) + the mic on my phone (with some extremely DIY editing) = something hopefully entertaining for you, and definitely worth it for us if only to help us keep our sanity during all this.
(also chag Pesach sameach to anybody celebrating the holiday! :)
Awww! A Clint Buchanan mention! Man, I miss One LIfe to Live so bad!
Anyone surprised by how long they’ve watched a show? Especially when you’re only 28. I started watching soaps when I was 6. At first it was ABC soaps like One Life To Live or GH. Then Port Charles. I was always having surgery for my Cerebral Palsy and abc was always on. So I fell in love with soaps. From Todd & Blair to Lucky & Summer. Yeah anyone remember those? Lol. My aunts & mom watched with me. We remember all the families, live music, fights etc. Marcie & Al (OLTL) were my first supercouple and they showed love could be beyond appearance. I knew everything Sonny & Brenda were up to on GH. Then when Jason/Sam started (nearly 15yrs ago) I was a goner. I drove my mom nuts with everything going on in Jason & Sam’s storyline. Especially rushing home from school to watch it on the vcr. It was a way of bonding with people & taking my mind off what surgery I had that week. So thank you to all the actors I’ve grown up watching. You’ve made a difference <3
Ultimately, that's what soap opera is about: families. . . .We know them so well. They become our friends. We yearn for their happiness--especially when it’s hard won. We laugh as they laugh. We cry as they cry. We can’t imagine doing without them. And when things are at their very worst on the show, that’s when we seem to enjoy them the most.
Five years ago, I sat with a group of One Life to Live actors and fans to watch the final episode of a show that had been with me all of my life. That’s not a hyperbole. My mom watched it when I was an infant and, by the age of 4, I was building Llantano Mountain in my backyard after my favorite show--my ‘Viki Show.’ This show took me through childhood to teenage years to college to law school and finally to my first real job. I had always envisioned bringing my future daughter into the fold--three generations watching, laughing, and loving One Life to Live together. Soaps are about family, but--thanks to the execs at ABC--I’m sitting here mourning a family that was taken away five years ago.
Taking it back to one of my original OTPs…
I wasn’t watching at the time they brought the characters back, but found out years later that they had Janet become a sick villain again, and I will never forgive TPTB for how they ended this story.
It was nine years ago today that All My Children ended its run on ABC. However, it came back for a brief run in 2013, set five years after the 2011 Series Finale.
I built General Hospital (The LA County/USC Hospital) in the Sims and recreated the 80s opening titles. I’ve also made most of the cast into Sims or close enough representations for fun stories.
