It's terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true. The bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats. And we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies and everybody lives happily ever after.

i am losing my fucking mind
#we dont use honorifics in my first language so whenever i have to select options (usually for flights) im always so confused#like what is actually the difference between miss and ms#i like miss bc it sounds more historical and im a historian so
"Miss" means an unmarried woman. "Mrs." means a married woman. (both of these have origins in the word "mistress" as in "mistress of the house".)
"Ms." - prounounced MIZ, btw - is a third option popularized by gloria steinem in the 70s - mainly through her feminist magazine Ms. - which is meant to be a neutral term, usable for any and all women regardless of marital status (hence the soul destroying irony of the tags above). it gained wider general acceptance when geraldine ferraro, the first woman to be nominated as VP on a national major party ticket, started using it widely to avoid confusion, since she was married but used her maiden name professionally. eventually over the years it came into common use though i do think the brits are a little more critical of it than americans (as far as i'm aware lol)

Hi. I'm an unmarried woman in her forties. I use Ms. and pronounce it "miz", though I don't correct people who accidentally use a soft S. I use Ms. because it's no one's business but my own whether I'm married, to a man or anyone else, and that's what Ms. means. It means fuck off, my marital status is irrelevant, just as it is for every man who uses Mr.
I've had people (usually children) ask me at work if I'm a missus or a miss. I have replied that I am a miz, full stop. And when they pressed for which one I was REALLY, I have replied, "Why? Are you going to treat me differently depending on whether there's a ring somewhere?"
That's what Ms. is for. That is its linguistic function. It says, "This is an adult woman," and nothing else. Nothing else is necessary, and in my case, nothing else is desired.
I also use miz for other women unless and until they express a preference for something else because I don't magically know everyone else's marital status when I meet them. That's a courtesy—I'm declining to assume marital status and allowing them to decide whether they wish to declare it.
Also, I've taught English and worked as an editor for twenty years. I am quite literally the grammar police. This use of Ms. is a standard construction. If you didn't learn it in school, someone failed you.
“Obscure facts” Boo boo I was taught it in elementary school. One with a state standardized curriculum.
Ms. is marriage-neutral and it’s pronounced Miz. It is deliberately different from Miss.

Why are all music teachers like this 😭😭😭
THEY ARE
when i was 8 i had a very intimidating russian woman as a music teacher- she was both my opera instructor and piano teacher. about a month into piano, she sat me down and said to my mother and i "this child- very beautiful voice, good for singing. i will not allow this child to continue piano. god did not want this child to play an instrument. he told me this in dreams. that is all."
my mom had it written down on a slip so we could remember the exact words because it was so funny. i HATED playing piano and i was definitely not good at it (i did end up having a good 5 years of opera training and ended up being a pretty accomplished choir singer though) and the idea of god sending my incredibly severe and serious russian piano teacher a dream begging her to stop teaching me piano was probably the funniest way it could have gone.

Lots of these, yes indeed. Some of them mitigated by (very likely probably) autism, so that it's the Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria that has the WORST impact, because chronic anxiety and people pleasing make damn sure I keep up and don't disappoint people.
I never thought I would be siding with the pope’s involvement in politics and cheering him on. I will say that.
Historically, the Papacy, as a powerful religious institution with global influence, has been viewed (and has acted) as a conservative force using its weight to maintain the status quo. This is a general norm for powerful institutions: those in a position of power will use the power to maintain said power. Those that do not do so tend to lose their power. As such, it is reasonable to view the Catholic Church and the papacy, in general, as being opposed to those that very much do not like the status quo.
That said, there are individual exceptions across history. In the early twenty-first century, the Catholic church is not as regressive as many main-stream political parties. The pope has outright criticized the fascist movements of the day.
This leads to a a strange moment for progressive individuals: in this instance the powerful head of a socially conservative movement is acting in their interests.
This is being drawn akin to a famous scene from The Lord of the Rings, where Gimli, a dwarf, is commenting to Legolas, an elf, about the strangeness of their partnership given the deep historical enmity between their races. Legolas reframes the situation by noting that despite being elf and dwarf, they are also friends, and it is not strange to work with a friend.
In this case, instead of dwarf and elf, it is progressive and pope. But, in this case, the pope also happens to be an individual from Chicago (who keeps pissing off the president of the US). And that is a category of individual a progressive is far more comfortable trusting.
Isn’t it fun how American leftists are happy to trust a guy from Chicago because he disagrees with some fascists, and just kinda shrug at All The Other Shit (I’m primarily thinking about the transphobia and covering up CSA, but if people really want I can go find a laundry list of opinions the pope should be hanged for)
What part of this post makes you think that I trust him? What part of this post makes you think that I, an agnostic transgender faggot am thinking about joining the Catholic Church just because he is currently the enemy of my enemy? This is a rip each other’s dicks off situation, this is an expression of bewilderment that the pope is one of the only major leaders in the western world actually pushing back against Donald Trump instead of burying their heads in the sand like the fucking cowards they are. I do not shrug off the other shit the Catholic Church has done, this is a deeply evil and extremely powerful organization that has worked to oppress people and stifle progress and I am thrilled the pope is using that undue power to critique the current fascist regime in America.
A big part of why conservatives keep winning is that conservatives with opposing viewpoints are willing to band together to fight for the one individual issue that they agree on, whereas progressives refuse to band together unless we agree on every single issue.
an imperfect ally is better than a perfect bystander
the old boomer who "doesn't get the gays" but still votes blue every election is still a better ally to you than every well-spoken, woke millennial who says all the right shit but didn't vote because they "didn't like either option"
the lady who voted for trump but has changed her mind since and is calling her senator every day is a better ally to you than anyone very politely apologizing for how awful things are and not doing anything to actually help
