ANCHOR THE CASTLESHIP
Sun
Ko-Fi More Things By Me
It wasn’t so hard to believe, once you saw her. Aberash leaned against the ship’s railing, light reflecting off her hair, and Estelle could imagine it was fire, contained and tamed. Eyes the exact shade of blue as the sky on a cloudless day. Brown, freckled skin that suggested a lifetime spent under the sun, but never once burned by it.
The idea that Aberash was the daughter of the sun god should have come as less of a shock.
Still, Estelle told herself, it was one thing to believe - to know - that demigods were out in the world, causing trouble for monsters such as herself, and something else altogether to discover that one of those demigods had been serving her meals for over a year.
Estelle took a deep breath and steeled herself. Aberash may be a demigod of the sun, might have the ability to reduce Estelle to Ash with a single glance, but this was still Estelle’s ship. Aberash was still under her command.
“Why a cook?” she demanded, striding up to stand beside Aberash at the ship’s side.
Aberash didn’t look at her. She kept her gaze on the horizon, eyes worried. “I like to cook.”
“That’s it?”
Aberash did look over then, head tilted. “What else would it be?”
“I don’t know. But you’re part god. Why would you allow yourself to be... to take a job that...”
“Why would I decide to basically become a servant?” Aberash suggested. When Estelle nodded, the demigod answered, “Because I wanted to. I like to cook. I don’t like being a demigod.” She shuddered. “Because the farther I am from the purifiers, the better.”
“Why? They don’t kill demigods.”
“Oh yeah? When was the last time you saw a demigod, Captain?”
“I’m sure they don’t come out here.”
“They don’t seem to go anywhere. I don’t know what they had planned for my sisters and I, and I never want to find out. And, honestly, I’d rather not talk about it. It doesn’t effect my job. It doesn’t matter out here.”
Estelle’s eyebrows went up. “You’re going to stay?”
“Why wouldn’t I? Unless you’re planning to throw me off, of course.”
“No! I mean, no. I just didn’t think...”
“...That a demigod would stoop so low as to associate with pirates? I was just as much a demigod when I joined as I am now, Estelle.”
She said it gently, but Estelle still felt chided. She nodded, hoping her embarrassment didn’t show. “In that case, you’d best get to making dinner before the crew mutinies.”
Finished this drawing I started yesterday night! I pretty much like the result, drawing hunters is FUN.
This is Aberash, Deivha’s and Yared’s dad, he was not an awesome parental figure but boy he tried.
