Listen, I'm not saying the Abidan are necessarily bad guys. I'm just saying that if you view them as a collection of adults constantly bringing children into existence only to let them die of sickness and disease by refusing to provide medical treatment. Then their stalwart protection of those children against monsters and other adults becomes less impressive.

Especially when they don't really think of the children as people unless they manage to grow to adulthood.

Or when they can see the future and know exactly when and how they are going to die and still do nothing.

Or how they immediately used the initial success from trialing having doctors treat the sick children to have a bunch more children.

Or how they got really freaked out when one of the doctors quit so they slapped heavy restrictions on the rest of the doctors to make them behave.

Or how they got outraged that one of the doctors euthanized a suffering child instead of letting them wither away through years of suffering before their eventual guaranteed painful death.

Or how they got shocked that one of the doctors started claiming that they were evil and needed to be destroyed and couldn't understand why.

Or how they imprisoned the last doctor without access to support for using an untested treatment on himself in order to save a child.

Or how when a man who wanted to be the very best protector he could be ended up being really good at killing instead, they forced him to execute sick children for thousands of years, all the while having more and more children. More than they could ever protect from monsters and other adults despite that being their original supposed purpose.

Anyway, I don't blame Ozriel, Vroshir, or even the Mad King for hating them. What they do after the fact, less so in many cases. But hating the Abidan as an organization? No, that feels pretty justified sometimes.

For the Cradle people:

Akura Charity is my favorite supporting character in the entire series.

Introduction to the story? Immaculate.

Spending babysitting duty in an artisans smock carving statues? Immediately identifying the cop and letting your doorman rough him up while you talk to his prisoner? The casual twenty-story flipping of a chisel while you take a break and talk to your nieces friend?

Flawless. Perfect. I suspect she had babysitting duty because it's the closest she gets to actually relaxing. She's the straight man to her father's wacky shonen-protagonist-post-series-nonsense.

And they're both immortal so this couple months a decade where you don't have to send Dad through a portal because he's trying to start fights with randos out of boredom, or trying to keep people from throwing themselves at your vicious wine aunt grandmother.

Her friendship with Min Shuei? Delightful. Charity is the perfect foil Min Shuei and once again is the one brain cell keeping the world together all through the mid series.

Her relationship with the freshly powered up Lindon? Easily slips into addressing him as an equal despite their previous history.

Her sacred arts are cool as fuck.

She doesn't hold back on sarcasm.

She offers lessons in cutting people with words.

And she seems so down-to-earth for one of the world's most powerful beings.

Plus the sculpting outfit. So hot to see a powerful woman with a healthy hobby

Inktober day 6 - Durandiel

Underrated character imo

Personally, I love the theory that Lindon becomes the new Adriel. There are so many reasons as to why it would work. Mainly, his duality and the fact that Lindon embodies both the concept of creating something, but also the nothingness that has to come before anything is created. Those aren't the only reasons though. My reasons:

- The two judges he met before even hitting Iron were Restoration and Destruction

- He has pure, cleansing madra and destructive blackflame

- Lindon's soulsmithing tool Genesis has this same duality

- He had the Void Icon and the Hammer Icon

- Void is what comes before creation, Hammer is used to create

- Lindon's two Icons represent Nothing and Something

- Or the absence of something and making something

- Lindon represents growth from Nothing (Unsouled) to Something (one of the most powerful Sacred Artists to ever inhabit Cradle)

- He is meek and polite but able to throw his weight around if he wants to (his personality has two sides here)

- Lindon calls himself the End but he is also a "creator" as a soulsmith

- He says the above twice, and once at the end of his Cradle arc but at the beginning of his Abidan arc. This moment is both a beginning and an end simultaneously

- The above also links to the idea of a circle. An embodiment of opposing dualities in a single manifestation. Every point of a circle is both a beginning and an end

- When Lindon ascends, Eithan notes that he has a "fine pair of Icons" alluding to the duality of having Nothing and Creation

My new headcanon is that the real reason Makiel doesn’t look eternally youthful and physically flawless like the other Judges do is because he knows that, by appearing as the same stern DILF with a vague air of perpetual disapproval that he was when he first ascended all those centuries ago while the rest of the Court of Seven all look like ethereally gorgeous twentysomethings, it’ll make everyone instinctively assume that he must be the oldest and wisest of the group.

And therefore in charge.

Ozriel, who is at least a solid couple millennia older than him and just as much of a stubborn control freak, finds this completely infuriating- but not enough that he’s going to let himself look even a fraction less hot. Death first.
