About Survival

Stress is already

Eating me alive,

Bated breath in hopes of being plucked from the writhing masses.

They remind her of the glimmer of her eyes when she was told to live great

Dreams in intangible clouds and of scorching stars close enough to touch.

Though disabused of her daydreams, she continues the reaping of her meager rewards,

And when she’s satisfied, she lays herself carefully alongside her kin on the cold, hard ground.

Above her the vultures circle, scrutinous eyes and practiced beak and hungry belly.

A ruthless flaying and displaying of ragged lungs and heart kicking and screaming

A humble offering to rapacious buzzards who screech we don’t want you

Even as they take and take and take

And when they’re gone, throbbing hearts seized by greedy maws,

They leave a gaping wound, and
