Reread manga ch 34-36(some of my favssss- the moby dick arc!) and am just. So emotional. Thinking about Kyouka and Dazai’s conversation.

Just. Thinking about the parallels between them, how they both got roped into the mafia at 14, both learned to kill at such a young age…

how Dazai tries to speak with her at first with his cheerful mask, and Kyouka isnt having it. How she tells him “I’ve had enough. Nothing matters anymore,” Fully intending to let herself die. She doesnt see how she could be saved, how she could hope to thrive in the light.

And Dazai’s expression changes and you can SEE the moment he realizes that oh. She’s just like him. And maybe he can save another orphan from the same pain he went through. Because no one was there to save him, and he failed to save Akutagawa, but maybe he can do something right just this once.

And so he switches tactics and shares with her just a glimpse into his own past, offers her an example of how people can change, how a flower who bloomed in the darkness truly can flourish in the light…

And as Dazai’s talking, you see him flashback to Oda’s silhouette, and he fiddles with that old match box, and you realize. He’s talking as much to his younger self as he is to Kyouka. He’s telling her the same things Odasaku told him. And he knows that this girl, who’s only killed 34 people, can still have a second chance. Because after all, Dazai was once the black wraith of the port mafia, the boss’s perfect prodigy… if he can learn to thrive in the light, then anyone can.

And so, he talks Kyouka down from her ledge, and becomes the person who his younger self needed- and yes, his past is still marred with blood and guilt. But maybe, in doing this, he can fulfill Odasaku’s dying wish- and his world will become just a bit brighter.
