She tells me “So you might not want to hear this, but that was emotional abuse” And she tells me “And it might not hit you now, but when it does, it’ll be okay. Even when it feels like it won’t.” And I laugh— because I had no other way of processing it. Words come tumbling out and things that seemed kind of... you know, normal. They were suddenly clarified and put together. And that deep, ugly feeling that sits in your gut, the type that wants to come pouring out of your chest that’s been burning your insides is suddenly afterbirth in ugly laughter that you can’t contain and feelings that you don’t know how to control. - That night I look at my phone screen and my eyes are damp burning from sharp blue light in a dark room. Asking about the signs, what it all means, somehow asking for validity if what I felt was... real. because I can’t be sure about such a heavy word. Imagine. I mean, abuse. Abuse. Abuse. Surely something like that you would’ve noticed earlier. Something like that wouldn’t have been like that. You would’ve noticed, your friends would’ve noticed, they wouldn’t have been so supportive, and you wouldn’t have seemed so happy, and things wouldn’t have turned out like that, and you wouldn’t have been the villain and you want a refund of the time you lost and it hurts like hell because you were abused, damn it, you were, someone you loved hurt you and he’ll never know and you have to pick up the pieces and you and— - I tell her “I won’t ever get closure on this. I don’t know where to put All Of This.” And I tell her “But I think that’ll be okay, one day. One day, I think that’ll be fine.”
