In light of Apple, a trillion dollar company adapting the book series into a subscription-only TV show, yes, I am posting this here so maybe people will stop defending slavery apologism in 2025 despite claiming to hate JK Rowling for doing the exact same thing. It is so clear that White Queer People only hate JK Rowling because she openly hates trans people, and for no other reason.
If your favorite author is baking slavery apologism into her worldbuilding, and expecting you to go along with it, that author is racist, and if you repeat that slavery apologism, you are also racist.
Just because someone else did the racism first does not mean you now get a free pass to be racist by repeating and defending the slavery apologism as though it's just a natural state of the world, and not something a racist white woman wrote into her books because she's racist.
If you understand that JK Rowling is racist by writing the Happy Slaves trope in Harry Potter in 2000, then you also have to grasp that Martha Wells is racist for doing the exact same thing, first in 2011, then in 2017, and continuing to this day by never having anything in the series push back against the slavery apologism she set up in book 1.
[ID: An edited version of the meme of someone in a pink cardigan holding up two photos to someone else in panel 1, and saying, "Corporate needs you to find the difference between this picture and this picture", before revealing in panel 2 that they're the same picture. The first panel has been edited to have a pink background, and blank white boxes where the pictures go, to be filled in with text.
The pictures have now been edited so that the first one says: "JK Rowling saying in 2000 that "House Elves" can only be happy if they're enslaved into cooking or cleaning for other people, so telling them they can do anything they want is the real cruelty and abuse, because they just naturally want to be enslaved."
And the second one says: "Martha Wells saying in 2017 that "SecUnits" can only be happy if they're enslaved into being literal meatshields other people, so telling them they can do anything they want is the real cruelty and abuse, because they just naturally want to be enslaved."
In both, the words "real" in "real cruelty" and "naturally want to be enslaved" are underlined for emphasis.
Please download the image description here if you save this meme to use as a template for the future, and simply edit the parts of the description you need to change for whatever version of this meme you're making. I edited panel 1 to have straight up and down boxes to make it easier to type in, and made the background pink to show that it's the same person in both panels, which took me way too long to notice.
It's almost Pride month 2025. Stop praising a book series and author that's been doing slavery apologism since at least 2011, with no signs of stopping, when her supposedly Queer protagonist is based entirely upon biologically essentialist stereotypes of nonbinary and aroace people.
If the "Queer book series" is racist and has slavery apologism baked into the worldbuilding because the author is racist, it's not actually something to celebrate. Queerness isn't just for white people. Especially not when the Queerness everyone points to is literally just based on bigoted, outdated stereotypes that the only way to be nonbinary or feel no sexual attraction is to literally not have any genitalia at all.
It is 2025. It's almost Pride month. Get better standards for "Queer icons" than racist books by racist white cis women who celebrate whitewashing, can't even be bothered to research what the word "nonbinary" actually means, and keeps going out of her way to bake slavery apologism into her fictional worlds because she thinks Some People Are Just Naturally Suited To Being Slaves. And therefore that means it's not actually slavery.
There is nothing Queer about racism. There is nothing Queer about a cis woman obsessed with biological essentialism stereotyping nonbinary and aroace people.
If you say you hate JK Rowling for her racism and bigotry towards aspec people as well as trans people, then you need to also have just as much of a problem when other white authors do it.
Especially when that author, who has made her fame and money pretending to be anticapitalist, is loudly and proudly teaming up with a trillion dollar corporation to make a TV show where they whitewash the protagonist of the series, and this racist white woman cannot wait to tell everyone how overjoyed about all of this she is, while telling you to fork over your money to the literal evil corporation she's been pretending her books are about fighting against.
This Pride month, actually take a stand against racism in all its forms. Cancel your Apple TV+ subscription if you have one. Tell corporations and the authors that sellout to them that you will not tolerate or support whitewashing.
Stop tolerating exorsexism and bigotry towards aroace people, and get better standards for what books you classify as "Queer icons" simply because the author's using the bigoted nonbinary / aroace robot stereotype, with absolutely nothing in the series to make it anything but just the exact same biological essentialism everyone claims to hate.
If you say you hate JK Rowling for the bigotry baked into her books, then you also need to hate the other white authors who do the same. Especially when that author is currently selling out to Apple and praising them nonstop for whitewashing her own protagonist.
The fact that there are so few people talking about these problems even while the book series is getting adapted into a TV show by a trillion dollar company (despite the books pretending to be against this very thing) is absolutely absurd. Especially when I keep seeing people still, in 2025, lying about how progressive this series and author is.
