Gothic & Lolita Bible (GLB) Volume 33 - Accessory Tutorials
I'm going to an anime convention in July and would like to know how I should go about making dio's arm rings/gauntlet thing that he wears. Any ideas?
Method 1
I found a 3D printer pattern here, so that’s one option.
Method 2
The_Lady_Strange on Stalkr used metallic gold spandex wrapped around thick cord
(Original post is here, though the photo doesn’t show up)
If you need quick and easy, the cord method is probably a good idea. You could mount the cord on a foam bracer.
Gyro’s Hat and Goggles
The Hat
I bought the “Mongo Hat” (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Halloween-Costume-Mens-Mongo-Hat-Brown-G1902-One-Size-/262592829540) and cut the slashes into it with a boxcutter. These are generally available at Value Village at Halloween for a bit less than the ebay price, but I'm sure other costume stores would have it.
The one downside is that you can't remove the velcro from the back brim without ripping that chunk of felt off with it. I find painting a scrap of felt or fleece and stitching it over the hole works just fine. Worst case scenario: it's in the back and unlikely to be seen in photos.
The Goggles
The goggles I did out of foam and worbla. They don’t look the absolute best, but they look fine in pictures.
I cut two large ovals and two skinny rectangles out of foam for the main “eyepieces”. The rectangles are 1/2” wide and as long as the circumference of the ovals. I then traced the hourglass shape between the two eyepieces out on foam like so:
The three pieces should fit neatly together because they will be getting glued like that.
I then traced all of these shapes out in worbla and cut them out.
My next step was to hot glue my foam oval and rectangle pieces together to create the 3D eyepieces. At this point, I marked and cut the slits in the lenses.
Now I covered the foam in the worbla. I cut the slits in the worbla while it was hot with an exacto knife.
To glue the lenses to the hourglass, I cut a small piece of foam, long enough to span the hourglass and have about 1/2″ tucked up into each side of the lens
I glued the hourglass to the foam first, then glued the ends of the foam into the lenses.
I made the mistake of not priming before painting, which is part of the reason it doesn’t look very good. How to prime worbla
After a couple layers of white paint, I cut the fabric for the band: the measurements were 4.5″ wide by the circumference of the hat minus the total length of the lenses PLUS 1/2″ on each side for seam allowance.
I sewed the band in half (with 1/4″ seam allowance), turned it inside out and glued the ends into the lenses.
Finally I mounted the goggles onto the hat. It’s a good idea to either stitch or glue the band at the center back and sides to stabilize it.
Stay tuned for more Gyro!
So I am new to cosplay and I want to make Jonathan Joestar's classic outfit. How could I go about making things like the belt and gloves?
Alright so, probably the easiest way for you to do the gloves is:
1) Find yourself some long gloves and cut off the top halves of the fingers
If they are made of fabric, you need to treat the raw edges with FrayTac or something similar to keep them from fraying
Standard superhero gauntlet gloves would work, though they will not be as tight fitting. However, “Nobody is as beefy as Jonathan Joestar” is a pretty legitimate excuse for that bit of inaccuracy if you don’t really care
2) The circles on the knuckles can be done with paint, buttons or Hotfix Studs (aka iron-on nailheads)
3) Whatever is going on with his wrists could be easily replicated with strips of craft foam and velcro
As for the belt buckle:
…Now that I actually look at it, it’s almost exactly an upside down version of Gyro’s. The easiest way I can think of the top of my head is:
1) Thrift yourself a belt with a buckle that is fairly flat like this
2) Draw out the base shape of the buckle onto cardstock and cut out
3) Repeat step 2 on two layers of craft foam
4) Glue foam together then foam to cardstock
5) Paint your buckle gold
6) Draw on the details in pencil and paint on in black or dark brown, whichever you like more (the former will look more cartoony)
7) Cover the front and sides in Mod Podge to seal and give it a sheen
8) Super glue your new buckle onto the old one
Hope this helps!
Hi, do you have any advice for Abbacchio's wig? I'm having a lot of trouble keeping the spikey ends of his hair since they're at the bottom and kinda weighed down. Would also appreciate any advice on his head piece if you have any! I'm trying to make it from foam but I'm not sure if I can make it seamless.
I am not great with wigs unfortunately, so I can’t personally make any recommendations -_- However, I think you may be able a tutorial to help with those gravity-defying tips over in the Arda Wigs Tutorial Section.
As for the hat, that is much easier than it looks :)
You will want to thrift yourself a felt hat with a rounded crown like this:
I specify felt because it won’t fray and the spiky shape will be comfortable on your head.
Simply draw your half-a-broken-egg shape directly on to the felt, then cut out.
That’s it, all done! Unless your hat is in the wrong colour, in which case you can paint it with fabric paint.
You may also want to attach a comb or a few bobby pins to the underside to keep it in place on your wig
I plan on doing a Bruno cosplay some time in the future, & I wanted to know how to make his hair clips. Are there any YouTube tutorials or cosplay blogs that have experience cosplaying him? Anything helps!
I have not come across much, but I will give the best advice I can :)For the hair clips specifically: I would recommend using Foam Clay (if you can get your hands on it) because it’s easy to get a nice, curved surface and it’s very light. Foam and worbla in the Sandwich Method would also work.
For any method, gluing bobby pins or barrettes to the backsides is probably your best option for keeping them attached. If they come out too heavy for that, use magnetic purse snaps: Attach one to the clip and one to a small piece of craft foam that will sit underneath the wig against your head.
Hope this helps
