Hi, question, but is it possible for a butch to be okay with their long hair. I'm um... a biaroaceflux sapphic trans woman and I really, really love my long hair. It feels really good to keep it long as a trans woman, but I still want to call myself butch. I usually prefer to dress masculinely and feel more comfortable in filling masculine roles in ways that make me comfortable. I am however fine with wearing long capes that are translucent and have glitter on them. I like to sometimes wear more feminine fitting masculine looking clothes. I like to wear skirts and dresses (not as often), but I really do love being a butch. My girlfriend, she's cis, and it is a femme. Idk if she's hyperfemme or anything, but whatever. Idk, I really like calling myself a butch, but I feel too ashamed to and like I'm not allowed to call myself one. Am I too feminine? Am I not masculine enough? I don't know, you seem like a really informed person in the butch community and I want to know if I am allowed to call myself one. It feels right calling myself a butch, but I don't know if I fit the definition of a butch.

Yes, you can absolutely be butch and have long hair, and there’s many different reasons for butches to prefer long hair. A few of those are if they’re transfem (like you), indigenous or native, or simply their preferred personal expression. I prefer to have short hair bc i’m transmasculine and long hair makes me dysphoric. I know several transfem butches who wear their hair longer bc short hair makes them dysphoric.

Butch is not an aesthetic (as you touched on in your ask hehe) it’s an identity and a role that sapphics play. You can be butch and wear dresses and glitter and sequins, just like a femme can look masculine and wear suits and snapbacks while still being femme.

And just to offer some perspective on what butches with long hair can look like, here’s some photos! (idk if all of these people identify as butch, but the word butch was attached to all of the original sources)
