From the rooftop terrace of Alkibiades's villa in Athens, Kyra watched the setting sun paint the Parthenon in a golden glow and resolved never to come back to this wretched city again.
Kassandra poured her another cup of wine. "I know they're hard to work with—"
"More like impossible. They refuse to hear anything that won't fatten their own coffers first." Kyra accepted the cup gratefully and pressed it to her forehead, the silver cool against her skin, trapped as she was within the stone walls of a smoky, greasy city filled with too many people. Once again she missed the sea breezes of Mykonos, the open space. "I'm not here to make Athenians rich. If they want an alliance, they'll have to make it worth my while."
"Keep holding the line. They need you more than you need them."
Kyra took a long drink. Their host, Alkibiades, was one of those rich Athenians, and she was happy to keep drinking his expensive wine while he wasted her time with lengthy negotiations. "Keep holding on to my patience, you mean? I don't know how much longer I'm willing to wait for Alkibiades to bring his allies to heel."
"His time's running out," Kassandra said mysteriously, taking a long drink of her own that left Kyra to guess what she'd meant. "I've found where Hermippos is hiding."
"Really? And you let me blather on and on about—"
Kassandra moved behind Kyra and pulled her close, whispering into her ear, "I like listening to you talk about politics."
A frisson of pleasure ran up Kyra's spine. "You hate politics."
"Not when it's you doing the politicking. And you've got all the aristoi in Athens watching your every move."
"You're welcome for the distraction," Kyra said drily. "So where is he?"
