Niles Abara

So I finished The Outer Worlds 2 and… is that really it? No epilogue, no proper farewells, just a handful of slides? Niles only gets a brief mention in VAL's and has none of his own. Neither does the Commander. Where is my family visit, Obsidian? I even tried the bad ending hoping for something emotional, but there's barely any difference. Anyway, I went to dig around in the loca files and got my crumbs:

!! HEAVY SPOILERS for the endings and Niles's story below The family slide does exist: "He invited his former Commander on a visit to Triangulum. The duo enjoyed some R&R, their weapons holstered for the most part, before meeting Niles' extended family. The Commander gave Niles the confidence to reconnect, until duty once again called."

Now, if you were close to Niles and decided to sacrifice yourself, he'd offer to stay with you (posting some variations here, I couldn't get any of this in the game)

Niles: "Reckon I'll join you." Commander: "No point in both of us dying. I'll go alone." (if Zeb is dead) N: "I've already lost Zeb, Commander. If I had to mourn you too, ain't sure my ticker could take it. So… it's settled then. If you're going, then I'm coming with you." C: "Are you sure? This isn't the kind of decision you can take back." N: "You asking me if I want to die? Answer's no. But I'm not about to watch you go to your death all by your lonesome neither." // "I'm not just gonna stand idle while you go to your death!" C: "That's exactly what you're going to do. I won't have your death on my conscience." // "No buts, Agent Abara. This is something I have to do - alone." (you can talk him out of it or accept it) C: "If you really care about me, then live for me, Niles. Make my sacrifice count."

N: "When I found you, I was just coming out of the dark. What'll I do when you're gone?" C: "You'll find your way. I know you will." or C: "No, I've changed my mind. You… mean too much to me. I need you to live." N: "Mighty relieved to hear that, Commander. And for what it's worth, the feeling's mutual." or C: "All right, Niles. You and me, then." C: "I won't lie - it'd be a comfort to have you with me at the end, Niles." N: "I've had your back since Horizon Point. Ain't about to stop now."

The end slide:

"Niles, unwilling to let his beloved commander go alone after everything they had been through together, volunteered to accompany them. He was at peace at the end, side-by-side with the agent who had renewed his belief in himself."
