Just a humble brag... (HOFAS SPOILER BELOW)
that I had written Truth-Teller as Enalius' dagger that Azriel is called to in A Court of Whispers and Song years before HOFAS 💅
Bestie is about to do something amazing...
Just wanted to carve out a little space to hype/celebrate/worship @mystical-blaise
Today she's posting her last chapter of A Court of Whispers and Song, a 300k+ word MASTERPIECE that has been in the works for over a year. Read it here on AO3.
I started reading this fic after I discovered the Gwynriel tag on AO3 and realized it could be a thing. One day, on the FBAA Facebook group, there was a post about fanfiction and a few authors called themselves out and their work. And that is how I met @mystical-blaise
Fast forward to today and I consider her a dear friend. We talk every single day, workshop ideas and beta read for each other, scream about plot twists, complain about the dumbs, and laugh until we cry. A lot.
I am so immensely proud of her and the work that she's done on this fic (and all the other delicious content she gives), and I am so unbelievably thankful that something as crazy as fanfiction could have led me to such an incredible friendship.
I love you, girl. I can't wait to read your original work and see where your talent takes you. Just don't forget me when you're rich and famous.
ACOSF Truths the Fandom is to afraid to admit:
Am I the only one weirded out by the characters' personalities? I feel like the characters didn't grow as much as I thought they should have. I felt like there was too much smut that I was disappointed that they were not able to explored Nesta's feelings towards her sisters and she was not gicen the opportunity of explaining why she was treating them like that. We never really got to see their relationship as sisters grow. It was like everything was forgiven in a snap.
Let's all acknowledge how the book plots have become repetitive.
XOXO, Suriel
So ACOWAS is actually a super popular fanfic. The funny thing is that Fanlore posted this uncomplimentary comment about s/jm’s books too:
picspam edits⇝ [ 5 / ∞ ] - illyrian bastards ( acotar series ) ;
rhysand; high lord of the night court. cassian; general of the night court. azriel; shadowsinger and spymaster
“If I had not met an Illyrian warrior-in-training," he said to Cassian, "I would not have known the true depths of strength, of resilience, of honor and loyalty." Cassian's eyes gleamed bright. Rhys said to Azriel, "If I had not met a shadowsinger, I would not have known that it is the family you make, not the one you are born into, that matters. I would not have known what it is to truly hope, even when the world tells you to despair." Azriel bowed his head in thanks.”
Elriel is cute in a fic, it’s fine in artwork, and great in edits, but I don’t ship it. Not because I don’t think they’re cute together, or that they’re incompatible in some way, I just don’t think it would be a healthy romantic relationship. Azriel is a deeply mentally disturbed person who has gotten no treatment and counseling on how to deal with all of his pain. He doesn’t let people close enough to help him so his family has taken to pretending that nothing is wrong so to not push him farther away. A relationship with Elain would not change that, and in many ways make it worse. Elain is always put on a pedestal by the people around her: she’s beautiful, kind, caring, and pleasant, all things that people protect and cherish. However, we know from ACOWAR that Elain is not that shallow and there are parts of her that no one knows about because no one has tried to find out about them. I think I’m a relationship with Azriel, Elain wouldn’t be freed from this idealized version of herself, she would be trapped even more by it. It’s been 500 years since Azriel met Mor and he’s still holding on to 17 year old Mor who batted her eyelashes and made a connection with him. He’s still holding on the the possibility of something with a woman who has avoided any sort of romantic interaction with him for 500 years. He’s not at all in the headspace for a relationship with anyone, let alone a traumatized young woman who has her own identity issues. I really hope this entire series with Azriel learning to deal with his pain, letting go of grudges he can’t do anything about, and starting friendships outside of his comfort zone. Azriel needs to heal from his trauma, Elain can’t do it for him
