movements I love: I won’t go into details about how to recognize a painting/what type of techniques they used since that would be like literal essays for me to write down, I’ll just talk about why I personally love them. I will, however, link some info about the movements in the titles so you can get a quick look.
renaissance (1400-1600): obviously, just look at my url, also this is from a European perspective just fyi. why I love it? I just relate a bit to that era I guess. it was born during a time of darkness and strife, the middle ages were not great for anyone tbh. the black death, the little ice age, war etc. the middle ages are also just?? empty in a way, there was no true sense of fine culture, we have very little information from that time and the artwork is... well it’s just memes basically. the renaissance people wanted to connect with the ancient Romans/etc. they loved old culture and art, they were all for that aesthetic which shows in their paintings, poems and handwriting. this period is dubbed the enlightenment for a reason.
renaissance art is the newfound (or rediscovered?) art form that’s pleasing for the eye/soul and is, in general, a promise and beginning for good things to come. it gave us some of the most outstanding pieces of art and artists in history. I can connect to it because I feel in a way we're currently living in our own dark age. our current art movement is... let’s just say I’m not a fan. I often find myself looking back at old art eras thinking we’ve lost something.
baroque & rococo (1600-1760): baroque & rococo is just, extra af. that’s it, it’s more of everything. think Louis XIV, pretty nobles in gardens and drinking tea. there’s not really a deep meaning for this particular liking, I honestly just think it looks pretty. most of the aesthetic tumblr photos of people looking at art or using them in edits are just rococo or baroque art tbh.
romanticism (1800-1850): I mean, just the name itself sounds magical. imagine living in a period dubbed “the romantic era”. this whole era seems like a fairytale, the art is full of adventure and promise. it’s mystical and magical, what’s not to love, really. it was during this time books like Pride and Prejudice and Frankenstein were published. it was popular to write poems and have super fancy handwriting. this era is focused on emotion, not necessarily “love” per-say, but deep emotional connections and it shows in their paintings. I think art from this era is so very interesting and pretty to look at.
impressionism (1870-1900): choosing a favorite movement is like choosing a favorite child, but if it had to be done it would be the impressionist era for sure. i love everything about it. the freedom, the colors, the technique and most of all the passion. it gave us Monet, Degas and many more. it’s the beginning of modern art as we know it today. this era was all about nature, and capturing things in its true form, not in a realistic way but in a soulful and emotional way. it’s just... whimsical and wonderful, I can never get enough of it. I’ve written several essays about this era (especially about Monet). they took some inspiration from the romantic era since they also focused a lot on emotion in their work or rather how color could invoke emotion. I would call them romantic rebels since they truly were rebels of their time.
Claude Monet: he’s one of my absolute favorites. like it’s not even a competition. I was first introduced to him when I was around nine, my mom got me one of his nymphéas series books for my birthday and ever since then I’ve been hooked. whenever I travel to Paris I always swing by musée de l'Orangerie or musée Marmottan Monet. I could walk around for hours just watching Monet paintings. they’re stunning.
More artists I love are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Goya, Degas, Cézanne, Manet, Botticelli, Rembrandt, Vincent van Gogh, Turner, William Morris and many more. I think you get my point, I love all the fancy stuff.
