The very dark leaves of Actaea simplex Atropurpurea Group (baneberry, cimicifuga) form a great contrast with the foliage of Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' (Siberian bugloss). In addition Actaea has dense spikes of small, fragrant, white flowers in early autumn and the blue flowers of Brunnera will appear in the spring.

The black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) was showing off at Coopers Rock State Forest this past Saturday. I have the same gut-level, emotional response to black cohosh as I do to Joe Pye Weed (now coming into bloom). Both are overdue for a stanza or two of my bad poetry. Let me work on it.
