I’m not Adam. Adam is just my name. . I recently created a SlateShot for an online acting profile. It’s a 7 second clip where you say your name and smile. Pretty basic. The site gives example videos, and in them every person says, “Hi, I’m {first name, last name}.” I did a bunch of takes, and when I was watching them back, I realized I didn’t say what everyone else said. Instead I said, “Hello, my name is...” . I gotta admit, the “Hi, I’m {name},” sounds smoother. But I don’t like it! I had to think about why, and the reason I came up with is I am not my name! I have a name, but that is not me. I am not Adam. Adam is just what people call me. . Years ago I saw a short cartoon feature on the Disney channel about a guy who created his own language. It took him ten years, and then his house burned down with all his work, and he had to start over. Eventually he finished his work becoming the first person to create their own langauge. Since seeing this I’ve often thought about creating my own language. I’ve never been too serious about it, but I have been serious enough to try to conceptualize some of the attributes and styles my language would have. From my thinking, I decided, long ago, one thing for absolute certain: . If I ever make my own language, the phrase “My name is…” will be stated as, “The world calls me…” . I identify with the name Adam. It feels like me. But at the end of the day, it's just a label that people use when they talk to me and talk about me. At the end of the day, my name has nothing to do with who I am. I think things like this are important to remember. . #AdamDunlap #Names #iAm
