Maybe my most ADHD moment in ages???
I'm not talking about the annoying or frustrating ADHD moments. I'm talking purely, stereotypically, wildly off-the-wall thought processes. Even as I was thinking, I was like, "Brain, what are you even doing right now." So I just read an extremely dark, tense book that involved a bunch of people studying Ancient Greek. Today, I'm excited because I just found out that my new fridge is being delivered. How are these things related? My ADHD! The following thought process and related actions happened in less than 5 seconds total.: So, my mom just texted that the new fridge is here, unexpectedly early. I wrote back, "Aaaaaaaah!" Because I am very excited about this (I hated our old fridge so much).
I guess because of the book I just read, Ancient Greek was on my mind. I remembered a Tumblr post from like 10 years ago, back when an absurdly large portion of the people on my dash were in PhD-programs for studies in Classics. The post had English text that said something like, "Nothing really compares to the beauty of Ancient Greek. The writing is so profound and cannot be replicated by the lesser authors of the modern age," and then had a quote with a lot of Greek letters that looked fairly identical/repetitive and several exclamation points and an attribution to a famous Greek author or playright I couldn't recall at the moment. All the Classicists on my dash were reblogging it with "LOL!!!!" or laughing-crying emojis. Luckily, my BFF, who at the time WASN'T on Tumblr, happens to be a Victorianist with an extensive background in Classics (do I know why I attract Classicists into my life? No. No, I do not.). I sent her a screenshot of the post and said, "Please help me. Why is everyone laughing at this????" She replied first with a lot of crying laughing emojis and then explained that it was, essentially, a quote that translated to. "Aaaaaaah! aaaaah! AAAAAAAAH! AAAAAaaaaAAAAH!" Because someone in the play/poem was screaming, probably from some kind of mortal wound or anguish. For some reason, this memory leaped fully, vividly formed into my brain. I knew I had to text back my mom and find the quote--something I dropped literally everything to do. I eventually found what I THINK is the quote in question (from Euripides) and texted back my mom just to say, "Or, as Euripides would say, [INSERT ANCIENT GREEK HERE]." I then had to EXPLAIN THE JOKE TO MY MOM, who does not know AND HAS NEVER EXPRESSED THE FAINTEST INTEREST IN ANCIENT GREEK that this just meant *incoherent screaming* (which, to be fair, she did find funny). My brain would not let me focus on work until I made that joke that literally was SO OBSCURE ONLY I PROBABLY GOT IT. AND I'M GLAD I DID. IT AMUSED ME. BUT WHY DID MY BRAIN COMPELL ME TO DO THIS????? So, I immediately called my BFF to tell her about this. Because she's perfect, she immediately remembered the post and totally got my joke. So, the moral of the story is--don't expect to understand your ADHD friends. Just accept their randomness LOL.
