Okay, people are misconstruing my post about adhd memory loss particularly the reference I made to adhd forgetfulness memes among other things
Let me clear something up here:
1. I have NO PROBLEM with the memes themselves, sometimes they can be funny, relatable and a way for people to relate to them in a humorous manner. They were used as a reference simply to express that people make memes and jokes, but it is rare that you see someone get down to the nitty, gritty harsh reality of adhd. Some people don’t like that and don’t want to do that. That’s their choice, I am not one of those people.
2. If you like the memes and the jokes, go ahead I am not stopping you at all. In fact, if I relate to the meme, I’ll share it myself for a “haha I do that!” Again, I will reiterate that I don’t have a problem with the memes! Nowhere in the post did I make out that the memes were not to be made and that if you relate/make the memes then “you’re a terrible person who invalidates the struggles of people who find having adhd harder than you do!”
3. This is a general statement, don’t come into my tags and say things then expect me not to react defensively. It’s a trauma response, so if I come across as rude then the likelihood is, yes I am being rude. I don’t necessarily mean to be, but like hell am I going to curb myself just for you. If you don’t understand what I’m getting at in a post, by all means send me a dm or comment and ask politely for me to explain or rephrase. I have no problem with it.
4. My post was specifically about adhd memory loss and the way I worded it was very specific and I’ll explain why.
Adhd is seen as the hyperactive boy disorder and not the memory loss disorder, so I was shedding light on that fact. The meaning of the post has gotten a little skewed since I posted it (it happens, it has nearly 40k likes and everyone is talking about their own experiences with it, which is great! I love it). If you don’t have adhd, but have a disorder/disability that causes memory loss and relate to this specific post, that’s fine. You can mention it in the tags or on a reblog, but I ask that you please be mindful of the premise of the original post. It was never intended to say that only adhd’ers have memory loss as it was written to be very and have a very specific meaning to me and my fellow adhd’ers. I am very well aware, as someone who has multiple mental, physical and invisible disabilities, that memory loss is not an adhd specific thing (I will reiterate that the post was never intended as a “adhd’ers are the only ones to have memory loss”). The usage of non-adhd’ers was indeed intended to mean “people who don’t have adhd”, but that doesn’t mean that those who don’t have adhd won’t relate to the post. It was said, so that those who don’t have adhd (see: neuro typicals) who tend to think it’s not as serious will now understand that for some of us, it is that serious
6. I have also seen in some peoples reblogs them talking about symptoms/traits that they have and some of them could potentially be adhd and some of them sound very similar to other disorders (like for example, dissociative fugue), but I am not a medical professional so I can’t diagnose someone and I am not one of those who feels comfortable saying to someone “oh it sounds like you have *insert rare disorder here*” because I could lead someone down a slippery slope of misdiagnosis and not being taken seriously by medical professionals. I will always be a firm believer that what you see online in regards to a disorder is usually always specific to the person who spoke about it. You won’t always relate, you won’t have the same experiences and that’s okay! You’re still valid, anyway. I also don’t think I should have to, but a disclaimer is always implied on my posts that if you believe you have adhd/autism/any disorder or disability, you should do your due diligence and research before you settle on a specific disability you think you may have. If you can (diagnosis is hard to come by, I know), you should go see a doctor so they can weed out what disorders you don’t have and find the one you do.
5. It is also in my introductory post that is pinned to my page that I ask you to use tone indicators when interacting with me! If you’re gonna say something that’s negative then you should tag it with /neg and if it’s positive then you should tag it /pos. If you’re making a comment but it’s not meant negatively and is just a general comment, but could come across as you being upset with me then you tag it /nm (meaning not mad). Then the others being /gen(uine), /genq(uestion) and so on and so forth.
The whole entire point of the post was to talk about the harsh reality of having adhd and the distress, like I stated, that came with it. It was also to shed a light that adhd is not always a quirky “I forgor” or dog from up “SQUIRREL!” disorder which is a common misconception that neurotypicals make and NOT an indication of what my fellow adhd’ers/autdhd’ers think of their own disorder.
