“A RETURN TO NORMALCY...” Or as close as we can get...
Over the past few years, I’ve tried to experience time in the moment or one day at a time; a difficult task when society establishes such a segmented experience. Try as I might, it’s hard not to see this year in particular, 2020, as a unique standout.
Way back, one hundred years ago, Warren Gamaliel Harding was elected the 29th president of the United States after a grueling period in our history. The United States had been involved in World War I; the current president, Woodrow Wilson, had suffered a debilitating stroke; the Spanish Flu was ravaging the planet; alcohol sales had been prohibited in the U.S.; women had won the right to vote; violent organized crime had just taken its baby steps; and the Ku Klux Klan had begun an expansion due to an influx of immigration and recognition of minority rights. To the average American in 1920, the world was in a state of savage disarray. One is free to draw as many parallels as they wish to our current world situation....irony indeed, but similarities exist between any two eras in time, so I’d advise you not to go looking for cosmic puppet strings.
The campaign slogan for the unexpected candidate who won the 1920 election was a simple, basic plea: “a return to normalcy.” The winner of that particular election, Warren Harding, wouldn’t have won a MENSA challenge, but he knew what Americans wanted to hear... no more upheaval... a return to a normal way of life... mundanity was the prescription. Little did those hopeful voters know that the 20’s would bring a new batch of chaos that was as discombobulating (two weeks in a row for that word) as the previous decade. Be careful what you ask for ...
I’m not planning any sort of history lesson or a political treatise, more to the point, I’d like to look at the bigger metaphysical question: just what the hell is normal? Our little time span of upheaval has upended “normal” on a grand scale of that there is no question. Pundits and comedians of all sorts have attributed this to the singular year of 2020; not the best way to cast blame in my opinion. If we lock ourselves into monolithic blocks of time and fail to see beyond them, we set ourselves up for inescapable periods of doom where our actions are useless. The truth of the matter is that massive change is/was/will always be happening to the human individual and we overcome them daily or we learn from the changes wrought.
In my classroom, I always had what I thought to be the most profound lyrics written by Bob Dylan in his song, “Its Alright Ma” to challenge the kids to think on deep level about their lives. The line goes, “he not busy being born is busy dying.” If you want to see a teenage brain go in to convulsions...ask them the meaning of that little nugget of wisdom. They will try, desperately, to figure out what Dylan means by these lyrics; some will crash and burn, others, through much contemplation, will figure it out. The lyric is figurative not literal and isn’t a one off event; it is happening daily... moment by moment. Life isn’t an experience of occasional catastrophic events, but a daily barrage of good and bad that requires our continuous adjustment. “Busy being born” is Dylan telling us that we must be about constantly adapting, learning and changing and this ain’t no piece of cake. The physical act of being born is perhaps one of the most physically traumatic experiences a woman has and Dylan, metaphorically, is telling us that we must continually be going through this as the alternative is a symbolic act of finality.
“Busy dying” again is not literal but a state of mind in which we experience our lives with helplessness. Death is unavoidable, but daily change and challenge are not the equal of death unless we choose to be passive and think yourself to be the constant victim of the life steamroller. The big picture is the recognition of daily experiences that make us into an ever changing, growing, improving, happy human being.... not overwhelming circumstances that we have no control over. I don’t deny the impact and occurrence of such events; these are not normal, but everyday readjustment to daily changes and choosing to be born again when these happen... that is normal. I overheard someone lamenting the loss (temporarily or not) of shaking hands. Yes, it’s a significant part of meeting people, but it’s not a necessity of the act. We’ve given fives, high fives, fist bumps, we’ve bowed, we’ve nodded, we’ve said, “whassup?” as a means of making acquaintances with one not being more “normal” than another. We all know people who locked themselves into a singular normal only to have them stressed with any deviation from their....here it is ...normal. That kind of daily mental anxiety is busy dying, grueling and a state of despair. No, thank you.
Normal is always changing, it happens so often that we don’t notice it when it does unless it appears on a massive scale; but not to worry we can handle it. Think of the small changes that alter our normal as much or more than these watershed historical events that plague us from time to time: marriage, divorce, loss of a job, moving, death of a friend, a health crisis, family struggles, addictions, etc. etc. etc.. These are constant challenges ... these are normal .... and they change our normal behaviors ...daily. I’m not suggesting that the current state of affairs isn’t disconcerting, they are most certainly, but I’m encouraging you to draw strength from the lessons we learn from the series of nows that are always happening. Your normal is the ability to face these obstacles and overcome them. What is happening now is in your ability to react ...the future who knows? Maybe Warren G. Harding earned the reputation of being as poor of a goal setter as he was a poor president? Good thing we are busy being born...
