My View of Confessions/Crush/Compliments Pages of SCHS
Keep in mind this is my writing to a student in journalism who asked my advice in what it could possibly be about. I outlined what I thought about the pages thus far: "Well that topic only has cons. If you look at mine it is at a much broader view point. You would start off by saying how this new form of communication allows students to vent to a generally large body of students(audience) compared to if it wasn't there. Most students feel alone and if they have no friends, this is the only real way to recreate that sense of self-worth. Why? Because it mixes Formspring(or an asking website) with Facebook(a largely populated website). If a person wants to say something but isn't sure who to turn to, he or she knows his or her voice will still be heard by the followers of the page(letting off steam like blogging does). It is satisfactory to know what people think about what you have been afraid to say in person. (This goes hand in hand with crush confessions and prom hints). You'd go on to explain how it is natural for humans to be largely entertained by gossip and extremely fascinated by secrets. Even if the sender is unknown.we like to know things about people who are our peers(even if anonymous) and we like to know what people think about other people. Knowing what people think about other people creates a new persona in our minds. For example, we now know that Marcus Jasper is widely adored and can be considered popular in some way and form that would not have existed if this system was lacking in existence. Next you can talk about what you would in your topic. You'd say that though positive comments are preferred, offensive and nonsensical ones still do appear if they aren't directly hateful. The only reason these ones are posted is because they either contain some sort of comedic element or are just a form of speaking their opinion against grievances in the educational system or high school societal structure. Bring back the emphasis on anonymous posting because this really shows how people like to say things without consequences, *not necessarily without credit* When students post a funny post with a lot of likes, they will jump at the chance to admit to a peer that they were the originator of the post. The anonymous aspect also allows students who are suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts to expel their problems on the the page and into the minds of others. At first, the allowance of these post may seem to be a negative aspect, but with further research, we would be able to find that it grants us three things: 1. A place for troubled students to share their problems; to seek help, advice and opinions from their peers. 2. Realization that our students at SCHS are compassionate, take suicide seriously and are almost always willing to help with others' problems with no regard or bias to who this person might be. 3. Lastly, a true perspective of how many people are hurting all around us to wipe away the fog that everyone has a perfect life. And that by reading about someone else's problems when you have some of your own, you no longer feel alone. This whole system allows students to feel that they are part of something big, and as a human race, proven by the multitude of clubs on campus, we all want to be a part of something. People like to feel together, not on separate levels, otherwise they may feel attacked, intimidated, inferior, insignificant by, and to others. This allows you to wrap it up with one final enigma. Who is the mysterious leader of the most successful confessions page? The only reason this works is because no one really knows who is running the page, it seems to be a male figure at times but it is truly unclear. The page leader comes in with "godlike" and "neutral yet positive" comments to stop the mayhem. In the back of our minds, we must confess that we all feel like the leader is in control and untouchable. The leader, himself, being anonymous, is granted a secret supremacy but is depicted as a true student no more or no less than others, with divine-like qualities. The simple idea that one student, or more likely, a group of students running a page full of secrets can cause some to be uneasy... but this is why we pray that the mysterious confession page leader shall never be unsheathed of his alias. " B and i are my best friend, sorry if it annoyed you. LOL
