Frailejones are keystone species, special plants in the high altitude tropical ecosystem of the Andes that collect and purify water from the misty air, giving drinking water for roughly 70% of Colombia’s population. - Increased temperatures have brought new threats to the survival of the frailejones - fungi and parasitic ambrosia beetles. - There are restoration projects underway, with army soldiers, trained to hunt their opponents over these hostile high-altitude environments of perpetual fog and sub-freezing temperatures, building greenhouses and nursery plots to cultivate frailejones. - Former opponents, the guerrillas of the FARC, could also prove useful in these ecological restoration efforts, as the loss of frailejones could cause the collapse of the páramo ecosystem, and therefore the drinking water for the nation. - #wanderxwonder #adventurecollective #ecologicalrestoration #waterislife

Mother nature’s column supporting her natural colosseum. Scattered around us were the runes of those from years past.” • How cool is this?! It reminds me of a brinicle (or ice stalactite) found in the arctic. Also the graffiti carved into the soft sandstone gave the appearance of ancient runes if photographed illegibly.
