Vent to self,

In light of having had conversation with my dad....

I don’t know what to think anymore. My dad has always had some great insight and he still does. He always does. I just have to take into consideration the things that I’ve gone through and what advice or opinion he had to tell me.

He’s the one person who, in the year and almost half that I’ve known him, has always been honest and unbiased with me. He tells me the brutal truth even when I don’t want to know it. How I am, and I how I’m feeling, he always knows.

With the information that I have now, I have no idea how to move forward. Do I stop? Do I continue? Do I confront? Do I stand my ground? Perhaps with a clear mind, I’ll know how to go forward with all those things. But at the time being, I don’t want a clear mind. I want to numb myself with all the pain that I have in my chest and my heart. And close off from the world. My dad...

He’s the only one I can trust right now.

Ah, Dads – one of life’s many blessings. They’re not known to be a man of many words, but does Father really know best? We asked a couple team members from each department what’s the best advice their dad has ever given them and they told us some pretty deep-seated stuff. You’ll probably want to give your dad a hug after this one.

“As cliché as this sounds, the best thing my dad taught me was that actions speak louder than words. You can go on and tell people all these extravagant things about yourself, what you can do, or how you can help them, but it’ll mean nothing if you don’t live up to it. Be a (wo) man of your words. “The best advice my dad has ever given me is to ‘listen.’ As a kid he would yell at me to ‘listen!’ when he was trying to tell me something important. I remember constantly being annoyed because I always felt like I really was listening. One day as we were driving home in silence I thought he was being quiet because he was tired, but when I tried to start a conversation he’d just ignore me. Wallowing in the silence, I finally realized what he meant when he said to ‘listen.’ If I hadn’t been listening and paying attention to the silence, I would have never known he was upset about something – upset at me. Sometimes you have to forget about what goes on in your own head and listen to the world. “My dad never really sat me down to give me any advice. Instead, he expressed what he wanted to teach us every day of his life. We didn’t have much growing up, but that was never an issue for us. We were happy because we made the best out of every situation. No matter what, we made it work. His positive attitude in all circumstances made me trust that everything was going to be okay and it always was. There’s no use in stressing over things you can’t control – just smile through it all – and that mindset has gotten me through so much in life.” – J.P from our Marketing Team

“The best thing my Dad ever instilled in me was to never doubt myself. When I was 8 years old I really wanted to be in this dance group at my school. I thought they were all so beautiful and cool – something I never saw myself as. Before he dropped me off at the audition I got really nervous and said to him, “What if I don’t get in? I don’t think I’ll be good enough.” He looked at me, straight in the eye and said, “What are you talking about? You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. If these girls don’t see that, they’re blind.” It wasn’t even what he said really, it’s how he said it that made me realize that he’ll always believe in me no matter what I do, and as a doubtful 8 year old girl that’s exactly what I needed to hear.” –P.L from our Marketing Team

“Growing up, my dad was never one to hold my hand or verbally express his emotions. Even so, the best thing he ever taught me was that my abilities were limitless. When I was in kindergarten, my dad would take me to the park every day after school. He’d sit on a bench and watched as I played in the sandbox or swung on the swings. One day, he told me to stop what I was doing and try to play on the monkey bars. I didn’t want to because I was scared and thought, “That’s for boys. There’s no way I would ever be able to do that.” But he kept on insisting and I eventually went on. Of course, I fell on my face, but he kept on urging I get back on. I started to cry and yelled at him, “I can’t! I’m not a boy.” But he said, “You are just as strong as any boy!” So he held me up to the bars and helped me climb across. I remember eating dirt several times, but after a few minutes I was able to go across the bars on my own. I even braved some tricks! Now, when people ask me what my favorite thing to do as I kid was, I’d say the monkey bars. That’s the place where my dad showed me I had the capability to do anything, and there’s no excuse to say you can’t do it just because you’re a girl.” – K.L from our Creative Team

Even though they don’t say much, our Dads shared a lot of wisdom with us growing up, and it’s something we’ll keep with us forever.
