okay but dragon surgeons are criminally underrated. keynes slices temeraire open and digs around for bullets while the twenty-tonne beast is still asleep because he doesn't feel like dealing with him whining and flinching away from the scalpel. dorset just fucking climbs inside temeraire's gullet to look for damage and then tells him off for complaining while still being inside his throat. he sees kulingile and just thinks about dissecting him, like the stone cold bastard he is. is having negative amounts of any kind of fear re: dragons the main requirement to become a surgeon in the corps. how do they even find these guys.

I feel like Cardinal Lawrence and Captain Laurence would get along great. The repression. The self-doubt. The sense of duty. The humility. The people around them who don't believe they really are that humble. The catty colleagues. The constant pressure to dress more fancy even though they don't want to. Their incredible tendency to get stuck in world changing events. Having to deal with reptiles. Just wanting to retire please. They would be buddies.

Captain William Laurence

So I convinced my friend to read 'His Majesties Dragon'. So of course I re-read it too. Fingers crossed I can get them to continue the series so I can draw many more of these awesome characters from the later books as well. ;)

Laurence is a fantastic co-main character and to watch him grow over the course of the series is delightful! I've drawn him in ~1805 British Navy uniform, but with the "ugly green" color of the Aviator uniforms and a sort of harness. Harnesses being very useful when trying to climb around on a dragon mid-flight. It would have a chest/shoulder component as well, but since this is the not-currently-flying-but-could-in-a-pinch variation we're going with this being the "standard" uniform when not immediately on call. (and we're going to see a lot of it because the majority of important characters in book 1 are British Aviators)

Please don't mention any post book 1 spoilers (if we get there in the re-read I will be able to draw all the wonderful characters from the later books!!)!! Don’t let the fact that they mostly play messenger fool you, if you ever hear them coming it can only mean one thing: death is about to rain down from the sky and it’s too late to escape ....

I’ve got two more crest to draw, care to make a guess at what unit they are? For cookie points.

Captain Catherine Harcourt of the British Aerial Corps

I'm fairly sure Harcourt is the youngest Captain and Formation Leader in book 1. She is Captain to the Longing Lily who is Temeraire's formation leader and is in the Emergency Training/new Captains trainee group with Temeraire and Laurence.

In the wold of His Majesties' Dragon Longwings - some of the most deadly/instrumental special-ability British Dragons- will only take female Captains, as such the British Aerial Corps have made secret exceptions to Regency/Napoleonic Britain's social norms. So.... yeah I drew a lot of characters from book 1 in very similar uniforms... no time to get better at drawing legs and shoes than the present I suppose. ;)

Captain Jane Roland

Cpt. Roland is the Captain of the Longing Excidium. A well established Captain, mother to Emily Roland, and wonderfully blunt. (I would say more but spoilers and I want you to read the series)

Lt. John Grandby of the British Aerial Corps

Grandby, oh Grandby.... I won't say too much because I know too much, but in book 1 his journey/relationship with Laurence arc is very adorable and I enjoy the gentlemanly mannerisms the crew take on under Laurence's influence.

Cadet Emily Roland

Emily Roland is the daughter of Captain Roland and is set to become Captain of her mother's dragon 'Excidium' (Longwing) after her mother's death (Dragon's live a lot longer than humans so Captains "breed themselves" as much as they breed dragons, as dragons are more willing to work with a Captain who grieves the loss of their previous Captain/has had a similarly deep connection to their Captain). Emily is mistaken for a boy by Laurence at first, but only briefly. Technically she's supposed to have a bowl cut at this age, but the paintings of Naval Cadets/Midshipmen around this age had slightly longer hair so this is where we ended up.
