Kevin Cage of @spotlightsaga reviews... Bates Motel (S05E01) Dark Paradise Airdate: February 20, 2017 Ratings: 1.341 Million :: 0.51 18-49 Demo Share Score: 8.5/10 **********SPOILERS BELOW********** Despite how difficult I thought it would be to live in a post-Norma world, it's ends up that it's actually quite easy... Well, easier than I had imagined, because despite the fact that Norma is indeed dead, she is very much alive in Norman's mind. So much so that she's fully functional and performs all the duties as she normally would... Just one small issue, she technically can't leave the premises of the Bates Motel. Oh and technically she doesn't know anything that he doesn't, maybe she knows everything that went down during a 'blackout', but just like him she has no idea who his latest victim was, the man who burst into their home with full intent to kill him. The man who is later revealed to be connected to Sheriff Romero. Not only does she very much exist in Norman's world and carry on her duties as she would normally, she is still the same old Norma. This is not who Norman wishes her to be, but it is, in a way, exactly who he needed her to be... But she was always that. Always protecting Norman at every turn, making sure that he doesn't have to process too many fragments of his blackouts at one time, hiding his victims artifacts, helping dispose of the bodies... A number that I expect to see rise to new heights in this 5th & final season as we see Norman finally become the Norman Bates we all knew he would be... The Original Psycho. Essentially tho, Norma is now only what Norman perceived her to be... The lying mother, the perfect mother, the overprotective mother, the savvy mother, the loving mother, the die-hard mother, the overbearing mother, the nosy mother, the careful mother, the beautiful innocent mother... No matter how you roll the dice, she's his 'Mother'. And unfortunately, now that she's dead, she will never be more than that. No nuance, beyond the many shades of perceived motherhood... But like I said, we still very much have Norma, she's just not really there.
